Hi All,

I'm looking for a small business laser jet printer. It will serve about 5 people and be a fairly fast at printing and economic to run. The printer must have usb and LAN connection. Initially it will be connected through USB but once the server (Windows Server 2008) is setup it will manage the printer.

Requirements

  • Laserjet
  • LAN
  • USB
  • Windows 2008\Windows 7 Support
  • Econmical replacement cartridges

Bonuses

  • Duplex
  • Colour
  • Multifunction

Budget is around £150

I was looking at the one below.

Looking around Samsung seem to have quite a few small business range printers. I haven't used a Samsung printer before though.

Samsung ML-2580

The only downside is cartridge cost but it is a high yield cartridge (2500 prints). You may find them cheaper I haven't looked around.

Samsung ML-2580N Review

Its only a black ink printer and doesn't have duplex printing but that costs more.

Please advise.

Just to be picky if you want a Laserjet printer it will have to be from HP.

Assuming you just meant any old laser printer then you'll need to look at monthly print quantities, most office printers have a duty cycle that will represent a reasonable life at that level of output, get that wrong and the printer will cost a lot more than it looks.

Take a look at high end inkjet if monthly quantity isn't very high.

If you're sharing the printer then definitely go for networked, sharing via another PC even a server can be troublesome.

Andi.

We just picked up a Dell colour laser network printer for ~£120. Seems good so far.

The Samsung ML-2855ND is worth a look if you can live without colour.

I’ve not used this model personally, but the I have very similar model it replaced on several sites. They’ve proved to be fast enough, quiet enough, and reliable enough to keep everyone happy.

£150 with those requirements will be throw away kit. You will end up replacing it often.

£150 gets you a half decent BW laser.

If you want PROPER duplexing and some colour you can pretty much double the budget.

Not a Kyocera for my money - a distributor got me to try some B&W lasers and a colour MFP.

The MFP got sent back for a refund and I think all the B&W lasers are out of use now.

I'd have said HP but I bashed my head on their universal printer driver the other day and it hacked me off no end.
