If its primarily for gaming sod the i7 and get an i5 - negligible difference in the real world.

Swap the i7+mobo+ram out for:

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156)
(£123.39) £144.98

MSI P55-GD80 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
(£93.60) £109.98

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)
(£56.16) £65.99

Do this, also use the spare money to swap out the 470s for something more powerful and less power hungry. You could probably get 3 6870s!

If the toughest thing your system will be doing is playing games then your 3GHz Core 2 Quad shouldn't be slowing things down too much. The bottleneck is clearly your 8800GTX SLI graphics cards. If you did a big graphics card upgrade - GTX 580 perhaps - then you would see a massive performance increase and not have to spend the best part of a grand.

thanks all, still pondering as to what way to go,can stretch a few quid here and there,so
with that in mind may go with the gtx 580 and see how things go,can always go for the full system later if i want and add the 580 to that.

many thanks for your time and consideration

wessa

You might also want to consider a new CPU cooler - if you are overclocking the Q6600 just using the stock cooler. You may be able to take the overclock a fair bit further.

Also, if you go for a CPU cooler from someone like Thermalright or Prolimatech you will get top-notch cooling and you can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to buy a cheap mounting kit for any future CPU socket when they come out - so you can keep the cooler for many future builds.
