So I would like to play il-2 Great battles in VR, maybe DCS and MSFS but mainly I’ll-2.

I don’t want base stations or sensors all over the room. I don’t want any controllers as will be using my current joysticks etc.

Have about a grand to spend and would be paired with a 3080 initially (and 5950x) but happy to get a new gpu when the 4080’s drop.

Many thanks.

You don't want external sensors in the room so that counts out the Index and Pimax hmd's.
You sound like you'll be simming only so not having a cable or having the best controllers doesn't really matter.

Under £1k you have a few good options, all considerably less than £1k : Pico Neo 3, Pico 4, Quest 2, HP Reverb G2.

If I was in your position with your wishlist i'd look closely at the HP Reverb G2, or maybe the Pico Neo 3, because these have DP connections between PC and hmd. The Neo 3 can also let you use it wirelessly (if you have a suitable pc/router setup).

If you have a slight suspicion you might want to play non sim games like Half Life : Alyx then consider the Pico 4 or Quest 2 as these can do wireless. The Pico 4 is newer with some better features/specs whereas the Quest 2 is more established and with that comes more mature software and a greater range of games/apps.

Many thanks for your reply. Out of the ones you suggest which has the ‘best’ resolution and field of view? Cheers

It's all fairly close, but the best resolution is the HP Reverb G2 and Pico 4 at 2160x2160, the best fov is the Pico 4 (someone correct me if i'm wrong).

Thanks. The Pico 4 is less than half my budget, are there any better ones?

not in the sub £1k price bracket, i think the dearest decent hmd in that price bracket is the HP Reverb G2 which iirc is £5-600. they then jump up to around £1k for the pimax 8KX (not recommended for beginners) and the Index, but both of these 2 need basestations. don't let the low price of the Pico 4 put you off; some people believe it is manufactured at a loss, people think the Quest 2 is too (or was, it's had a recent price rise). the feedback so far generally says they are decent quality.

The G2 should hold 90 frames on a 3080 in IL-2, certainly will on the Neo 3 link. Speaking entirely for myself, the only time i ever find FOV limiting when engaging with a game (not looking for it) is with flight sims. The wide open sky you're not getting really stands out. I've no experience with a Pimax and the whole wide field FOV thing they do, but i'd love to see it while soaring mile high.

Mr Sukebe is the man to ask, he's done the crunch on the Neo 4 with the game, and is the general go to person for opinion on flight sims and VR.
