Hey all after a bit of advice now i know what i want. Not after a windows based HTPC Maybe in the future. something that will play my 1080p files with HD audio and at 24p. OPENELEC will be fine looking to spend around £300 if there is cheaper options that be fine if not thats fine also. Thanks

if you don't need >1080p and don't want Windows

why not just spend £50 on a Raspberry Pi 2 kit

they will decode the lossless formats and output at 5.1/7.1 lossless (so I have been lead to believe - I'm going to try one myself next week)

else if you want a PC as such

how about a Gigabyte Brix (lots of varients) or Intel NUC ?

I'd suggest a raspberry pi 2 as well. Does what you need and even has cec (well I know the rpi1) did. So no need for a remote as you can use your TV remote. Oh and it's silent. A nuc might give you slightly better menu performance but it's a lot to spend for little.

intel nuc DN2820FYKH is perfect for this, there is no need to use anything else.

Nuc
2GB ram (1.35V ram so choose carefully)
2.5" SSD or USB flash drive (I tested mine first on a USB 2 flash drive, then fitted an SSD - couldn't tell the difference on the standard skin)
Openelec

Job done. the built in IR receiver works well with an MCE remote (or a harmony), and will switch on the NUC from an off state.

I too have a raspberry pi (not the new one I admit) and the nuc is a much better experience, HD bitstreaming and Perfect 24p.

Nuc is about £100. the Ram and a USB drive is what £25 at the most?

my main HTPC - is a E7300 with 7850 or something graphics card

I love Media Centre 20 + MadVR - absolutely fantastic picture quality

but its not that family friendly - looking for a press and go solution myself

I was thinking of a Raspi2 for my setup as a "for the family device" - usb stick in the back with my kids content etc and hopefully they turn on and go

without faffing with windows etc on the main htpc

Im not very tech savvy. I love all the new technology but hopeless on how it all works. I was looking at PI2.But decided want something little bit more like a nuc. What processor would you need to be able to play smooth 1080p and HD audio? ive seen few people say the celeron is to slow in the Gigabyte brix. Another question how does plex work thing is we have 2 Samsung H6400 TV's we have 40" in our bedroom and 48" in the living room. And another thing my hard drive in my pc is nearly full of music and films i do have external HDD so im looking to back up my collection with not just HDD what other options are they many thanks gents for your help its appreciated

Nuc

I'm seriously considering one of these setups. Is everything super smooth and easy? True High Def audio pass through from .MKV?
My current HTPC is in need of an upgrade and figured if I used a NUC I could turn current HTPC in to a NAS or something.

All I need the NUC to do is boot in Kodi and watch movies/tv shows etc.....maybe Netflix

Same here Clipsey. But its finding the right thing to do this on HA HA...All im after doing is playing my 1080p mkv collection and HD Audio some of my 1080's are over 30gig rips. Plus having Kodi im not intrested in browsing we have a main pc that we have in our bedroom that cost nearly £1000 and that does all the downloading and browsing side of things and the mrs has a laptop. On top of that we got tablet and 2 smartphones
