Please Spec Me a Laptop

Looking for a laptop for a friend. It will be used mainly for word processing, surfing and multimedia (not gaming). Budget is up to £1000, but what would be best bang for the buck. I think up to £500 would more than do a good job, but I have never bought a Laptop so I am not sure.

A Dell Vostro 1400 or 1500 maybe? Add some upgrades like more RAM and a better-resolution display, and it'd be a very nice machine. The 1400 is smaller and more compact than the 1500.
