Please spec me a low budget CPU (775)

Please help to suggest me a CPU.

I have a P5LD2SE board which support intel LGA 775 and I need to get some RAM and a CPU to built it into a media center. It will be used for mainly play back video to a HDTV and I got a 7600GT for that as well.

Whats the best CPU and RAM for the job and whats the lowest budget sutiable hardware?

E2140 cpu and GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC5300C4 ram should be fine for a media centre pc.

Check first what motherboard version you have. If it is not the newest revision 2 version it won't support core 2 duo. You would then be stuck with a Pentium 4.

is it any better than the Pentium D 3.2 that I am using at the moment? I can buy that and put it in my main and transfer my pentium d to the media center?

Oh yes. Overclocked to 3GHz, we're talking about twice as fast.
