Please Spec Me A... Something

Hi folks.

I really don't have the first clue what I'm looking for here - I'm completely oblivious to the world of LANs, internet connections etc.

Currently, I have my pc hooked up to the net via a 3Mbps ADSL connection. I've ordered the parts for my new rig, and this computer I'm on now will be given to my housemate.

So basically, I want a "device" (heh) that will allow both pcs to connect to the internet independently, as well as share a Canon MP series printer. So what do I need? I did look into it a bit, and *think I need a gateway/router thing, but I'm probably completely wrong :)

Something secure, reliable, easy to set up, non-wireless that does the above. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the nooblike questions.

Yes, you need a wired ADSL modem/router like this one:

I quite like Netgear products, they are decent quality. The internal ADSL modem in it will negotiate your internet connection, then the four ethernet ports will allow you to share the connection to four computers.

You can share your printer over a Windows network, connecting the printer via USB to the master computer and then making it a shared printer so that any other computer on the network can use it. The only restriction here is that the master computer must be switched on in order for other computers to print. If you don't want that restriction, buy a Print Server and connect it to your router, something like:
