OcUK spexperts, I need your help!

I'm going to be building a new pc in a few weeks. Normally I'm happy enough to put a spec together for my own gaming builds, but the gf also wants to use this computer for video editing which is where I'm a bit lost (hex core? hyper-threading? moar RAM??).

So we're looking to spend £750 (give or take a hundred either way) on a suitable CPU, mobo, RAM and CPU cooler, but I need the following taken into consideration;

  • I'm happy to overclock (though not to expert, high end levels).
  • Despite overclocking, we'd still prefer as quiet a CPU cooler as possible
  • I already have an X-fi sound card that I want to use, so the mobo needs to be able to accomodate it, and potentially dual GPUs in the future.

I have everything else needed to get the rig up and running immediately (so she has it ready for college use) and then I'll be adding a more powerful graphics card or two in Nov/Dec. So please spec me up, and thanks for reading!

I have to ask what the other components are going to be used to make this a full system before specing as it would make life a lot easier

This. DVD/RW and hdd sata. Make and wattage of Psu. What case is all this going in. Is your GF getting an OS from Uni? Do you require an ssd?

Apologies.

Case = Lancool K7
PSU = Corsair AX850
DVD-RW = an old Samsung for now, but will be replaced by a BD-RW later
HDs = WD 640GB sata 2 drive for now, adding larger sata 3 storage and potentially SSD later
OS = W7 HP 64 bit

Edit:

Sound Card = X-fi Gamer
Current GPU = GTX460, but as I say, will be replaced before Christmas

Thanks for that Idleman, that looks pretty sweet! :) Nearly always go for Asus boards, and you got an SSD in there pretty easily too. Thanks, I really appreciate it!

Just a question about the RAM as I've never used Geil before; they're very well thought of on these forums it seems. What makes them so popular?
