Morning guys

Just finished building a pc for my 12 year old for xmas and im a little worried its not going to be good enough for him so i want to put my spec forward and a few benchmark results for you cleaver folk to analyse and pull apart, basically i dont know if its any good, in my head it looked good but now i have ran 3dmark im worried and with xmas just round the corner im starting to think it aint gonna run how he wants it too.

Please can i have as much honest opinion as possible, bearing in mind im not made of money and i cant afford top end equipment.

i think the games he has in mind are things such as minecraft and fallout 4

MOTHERBOARD: MSI Z97 PC mate
CPU: Intel I7-4790 3.6Ghz
RAM: HyperX FURY 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1866MHz
GPU: R9 280X 3GB DX 11 (Gigabite edition with windforce 3)
PRIMARY HDD: 240Gb sandisk ultra 2 SSD
PSU: Corsair CX 750W
COOLING: Corsair H55 Liquid cooler (noisy as hell, No pwm)
OS: Windows 10

i think he has it in his head hes gonna be running the latest games at 100fps and i know this wont be possible with the current gpu but hes 12 and doesnt understand!

i have ran 3dMARKS fire strike benchmark and got these results

3dMark score 7734
graphics score 8806
physics score 10234
combined score 3393
test 1 41fps
test 2 37fps
physics test 33fps
combined test 16fps

i have been out the pc game for a good ten years now so none of these results mean anything to me, im really really hoping some one here tells me the fire strike test is intentsionally set to really high standrads to really test peoples rigs and the above results are not what im gonna see when running games like fallout 4

Please help set my mind at ease guys because i really am losing sleep over this!!

cheers rich

ps tests performed with everything running at stock, no oc

Spec looks well balanced (which is the key when you are building on a budget). That setup will be higher than console spec for the rest of this generation and will be fine for years with another GPU upgrade in due course.

He should be bloody delighted with it! :D

Just a cautious warning though, remember that games like Fallout 4 are 18 certificate and imo really not suitable for a 12 year old.

If he's 12 he should be grateful he's getting a gaming PC at all..grumble,mumble...in my day....grumble, mumble... :D

The system itself is very good overall and will serve as a solid base for a few years. The weak point is obviously the GPU, but he'll get more than acceptable framerates.

thanks for the replies guy i feel a little better now, i know the gpu is the weak point but i couldnt really afford a much better one at the min so i tried to build the rest of the pc to be some what future proof for at least a couple of years, and ill just get him a better gpu for his birthday in febuary and ill stick another 8GB of ram in there when i get chance

ok ok im worried again!!! hes been banging on all day about a game called ARK SURVIVAL and how desperate he is to play it, so i have just downloaded it while he is in bed to test the pc and even on standard settings im only getting 25fps, it seems a little

Is there any thung i can do to improve this? the game doesnt look great and is a little stuttery

is the r9 280x overclockable? is it even worth doing? am i wrong in assuming its the gpu holding the system back?
it has the windforce 3 cooler

am i gonna have to throw out the GPU and go buy another one tomorrow?

cheers guys

Game is in Alpha, its not optimised at all. Don't expect decent frames from unfinished games, will probably need to drop the settings down a fair bit. A 280X can run the likes of Metro and Crysis on high settings, that's good enough!

Thanks for that reaper, just been looking on the net and came across a site called
Game-debate.com basically you input your graphics card and then you can enter any game your interested in playing and it will tell you if your card can play it and at what settings, i have tried a fair few games, all relatively new and all were playable at 1080 and on high settings besides just cause 3 which still came back at medium/high so if some one can confirm the reliability of this site then im happy and he can either take it or leave, if he doesnt want it, well its been quite a while since i played civilization :)

thanks for all the advice guys, appreciate it
