I have just got back from donating blood. They rang me last week and asked me to go in today because they are desperately short at this time of year. There was literally a woman waiting to take the first batch away in one of those Blood cars you see on the roads, they are that short!

I know there was a similar thread to this earlier in the year, but I just wanted to encourage anyone who is thinking of donating, or for anyone who hasnt donated recently, to ring and make an appointment. It takes an hour of your life, and a tiny amount of blood, but it really could save someones life.

Please :)

Agreed, I gave blood for the first time a few weeks back. Doesn't hurt, during the process, I didn't feel faint or queasy afterwards, it was very straightforward, and definitely helps. :)

Having some wierd blood group (<5% of UK :s) I have been giving for over 10 years now.
Not only do I have a supply ready (;)) if something nasty happens but the rest of the freaky blood people like me have a chance of getting some if needed.

Its well worth doing - I have not had a call so I guess they are fed up with my blood group!!

I gave blood once and then the second time I went white, sweated and practically passed out and the nurse stopped it after 2 minutes. I would if I could but body says no :o

"Donating blood means donating life". It is a very good work. I have donated five times. There is no harm to us.

Start donating bloods and save life.

Been a few times, everyone should go, mates are a bunch of girls and won't do it.

Just go, it doesn't hurt and you get Tuc cheese crackers and a cuppa.

Would do, but they don't allow you to donate if you have been pierced / tattooed within the last 12 months

Don't see how someone sticking a autoclaved needle from a sealed packet through a body part is any different to a nurse sticking a needle in my arm, but hey :)

Sad thing is, I intend to get another piercing before the 12 months is up...

i went, i only got my blood donor card not too long ago, thats handy if you have an accident they have a chance of finding your blood group

I will definitely be donating again, its a good experience the feeling of saving a life, and should definitely be done at least once!

Im O+ so theres plenty of people like me, however theres also plenty of people that need that blood! Its sort of an equilibrium

The most painful bit is when they take the tape off your arm and it clings to your arm hairs!

I think i can go in march :/ can you just keep going, or do they need to ring you?

Do you know this is a subject that infuriates me, not because I think giving blood is wrong, but because my local hospital(s) dont seem to be needing the blood like all the local press ads perhaps make out.

I have a condition called Hereditary hemochromatosis which is a genetic dis-order that means my body stores Iron and it generally screws up my liver if left untreated, the only way to treat it is by venisection which is blood removal on a regular basis.

Now here is where my moan comes in, I have the condition, my father has it and both my brother and sister has it. We were all diagnosed with it in June-July and all started treatment in November. There is nothing wrong with the blood, it can be used safely for operations and so on, but the blood that is taken from all of us (1/2-1 pint per week < thats each, so thats roughly 4 pints PER WEEK between us) the blood is quite simply collectly and then binned.

When I asked the nurses that carry out the procedure why (blood unit at local hospital) they simply said that they do not have the facilities to store the blood for use?

All these ad's saying we desperately need blood yet the same bunch simply dumping a guaranteed supply on a weekly basis, wheres the sense in that?

When the intense treatment stops and it drops to once a month/2 months then apparently the blood unit will then store and use the collections. So i suppose there is a little light at the end of the tunnel, but the hypocracy of it in the first place is astounding
