I have tried searching for this question ;) no joy.

So, I run an AMD dual core chip, with 2gb of ram and an X1800XT.
What are the benefits to me of an upgrade to Vista of any kind?

I don't use WMC, I do game though.

Sorry to sound like a noob, have been gaming since MS-dos days, but am very happy with XP and would like a pros/ cons of the new operating system and actual tangible improvements if that makes sense??

Kind regards,

Rik

If you just game then wait 12 months before upgrading, by that time hardware drivers will be established, games will be designed for vista and patches will be out to get the most out of the OS.

At the moment XP is still the best gaming OS.

You can also have the best of both worlds and dual boot XP and Vista, this is what I intend to do as that way I can just alternate depending on which OS offers the best performance.

If you just want to run one OS then hold fire with buying Vista until it has established itself as the dominant OS.

Much the same as 2000 and XP before XP started getting exclusive games.

Cheers, gotcha. It's just the next platform as such then? No inherent benefits except allowing more powerful future hardware and software?

Was just wondering why everyone is buzzing about it, then remembered where I was!!!!

Might look at it in 12 mths then when 4ghz chips, 8gb ram and some new DX10 games are out then.

Thanks again :)

give it a chance

To most people there is little or no benefit in going with Vista at the moment, as far as I can see.
Yes this might be true, but what if everyone decided not to go with Vista ? MS would be thinking HELP ,we just need to have a brave head on and say lets give it a go,if its not what you thought ,then reformat and go back to XP ,most people back up there programs et ;) c on cd.

I've tried RC2, and I gather the retail version is little different. I don't need to spend £80 to get a more resource-heavy version of Windows which does nothing that XP doesn't do, and in many ways to my mind is a retrograde step. I quite like the look of the Aero interface, but then that can be recreated very faithfully in XP with Windowblinds so I'm not losing out there.
