Seems not to work so well on my W10/pc.

What other software can I use to stream movies to my nvidia shield?

"Most importantly"! I want to see movie covers nicely, with a clean interface, TV shows, movies etc

Would kodi on W10 PC work with kodi on my shield, somehow?

Thanks so much :)

What's not working well?

Plex, Emby and Jellyfin are the main players really. And Plex shouldn't be giving too many issues.

I use Emby server instead of Plex (works kind of the same, can host it from anything that supports Emby). This keeps the library of media just like Plex server did. The basic server stuff is free, though like Plex there is a paid for thing you can do if you need more. Try out the free one first.

For the players I use KODI with the Emby plugin, this effectively leverages KODI as the player, but it syncs to Emby for the library. Works pretty well.

I was having major issues with subtitles in Plex, and KODI is a better player so handles basically everything :)

On my shield there was a couple of options I had to change within KODI, one was max bandwidth to allow more than 100mbps, and the other was allowed Audio codecs to do multi-channel as my AVR has 5.1.

Nothing else comes close to Plex really. Might be worth finding a few YouTube guides to follow for installing.

I installed the server element years ago and don't recall it being that difficult.
