Hey all just wondering if anybody has or uses the plex app on there Samsung tv's im still humming about HTPC all i would be using it for is my MKV collection which are a mix of 720p rips over 4 gig and 1080p mkv over 20 gig files and maybe getting something just for kodi to stream tv shows exc i really think HTPC would really be overkill. I have plex on my HTPC in the bedroom i love the interface of it and also like kodi . Is plex on the Samsung tv the same as the server on a pc

plex on samsung is just the 'user interface' side of things so you can access and play the vids from the server (plex is 2 parts).

Not sure which tv you have but the last time I tried the Samsung plex app on mine it was rubbish.

Samsungs built in 'media player' works fine with serviio (except mkv with subs - the subs don't show, external subs are fine) but it doesn't look as pretty.

I use plex on my samsung tv and it works ok, but as already said it can be slow and for some reason it likes to jump about on the menus. That said to be able to just watch my films on my server on my tv via plex, it does its job.

I use this and find it perfect for the use. I can't see what benefit a seperate HTPC would bring for what we use it for.

We have it linked up to the home PC which acts as the server via poweline adapters. Plays everything perfectly and don't have any issue with it being slow.

I tested both on RPI2 and Samsung app, and RPI2 is quicker. Also has the benefit of not requiring extra clicks > Smart Hub > Plex App > then loading in.

But sure if money is tight the app on the TV seems fine, I just like the convenience of the RPI2 more, which supports HDMI-CEC as well.

Haven't found the app on samsung hub slow, not compared to web client, but it depends on the spec of your TV.

Only negative aspect is that it's not written by the Plex guys, but an independent hobbyist who doesn't get paid for his work (but gets tonnes of crap off people on the Plex forums when something doesn't work right... Plex should pay him or stop advertising it for Samsung on their site, but who knows what their arrangement is).
That means there are some differences to the interface - some for the better, some for the worse.

Money isn't tight just don't feel the need for another HTPC when money could be spent else where i don't need another pc really we have a laptop HTPC tablet and 2 smartphones so browsing exc is well covered its just something for the tv downstairs to show me films and to have KODI also i could go the Fire tv route but that doesn't do 24p and has probs with the Audio my films are 1080p with HD audio and some 720p films with DTS. I heard the RPI 2 struggles with HD audio and doesn't play very well. By the way the tv downstairs is the H6400

I have the Plex app on my F8500 and I'm pretty sure it wasn't happy with MKV files when I first bought the TV but I recently re-tried it as I have a HTPC under the TV but have used it less and less as the TV has Netflix and Prime.

Tried the Plex app with a chunky MKV 1080p file and it was fine. I've think my Watchman rip is like 18GB and it didn't cough once. It's not as pretty as how it looks on the HTPC though.

I've got a NUC in the bedroom that runs Win7 and has Kodi. Covers everything.

I use the Samsung Plex app almost every day without any issues. I often play 35Gb mkv files with DTS sound using the app with no hitches whatsoever.

My living room hypc uses plex ht and my bedroom Samsung TV uses the built in plex app. I prefer the overall experience on the htpc but the TV works fine (especially is over Ethernet and not wifi).

I use the samsung app daily on two tv's and it works like a dream!never had any problems with it at all (apart from samsungs stupid way of updating apps on the 6400).

Another happy user with an h6400. The interface is a tiny bit slow, but it never takes long to find what I need.
