Hi guys, after a few ideas for a replacement for my aging core 2 duo media center.

I use plex media server to serve movies/tv shows and music out to a total of 3 rokus. 2 laptops various android devices (not all at the same time but at any one time it could be all three rokus and the main system playing)

the media server is also connected to the main television in the living room with surround sound setup.

I would like the best idea on the following

New case + power supply (case needs to hold up to 6 drives)
motherboard (with plenty of sata)
processor
memory
ssd

if there is anything I have missed please put it on!

my current media centre will have its data drives taken out with just the ssd staying and put into the conservatory connected to a television.

Thanks for looking!

Ideally dont want to spend too much but lets say up to £400 for now.

The current media centre is starting to struggle when all 3 rokus are playing as it transcodes the media when it sends it out. Each transcode tends to take up all the cpu time on a core so possibly the more cores the better on the cpu?

And if there is anyway of keeping it quiet that would be great as it will be in the living room. Current core 2 do sounds like its trying to take off at times!

I am looking to build a Plex server myself, and i was thinking about something like this for myself.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 530W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £65.99
1 x MSI 970A-G46 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £64.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi "Core" USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £46.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/4GX) £37.99
Total : £350.05 (includes shipping : £11.75).

I didnt include an SSD as i am not sure why you need one on a Plex server, since ur normal HDD's will slow it down anway.

This looks interesting. How good are the AMD piledrivers? I have always typically been a fan of Intel so was looking at i5's at the moment.

I want an ssd in there so that it feels more like a set top box rather than a computer when it is switched on. I found it made a real difference to my current machine, suddenly windows was up and running in seconds, all the programs are snappier. It will only be used as a system drive which I find is the perfect use for an SSD.

I am using my current system to run my plex server, handles it really well, but would rather have something dedicated, i would think the piledriver would do well, though i would recommend getting a good replacement heatsink for it.

For me an ssd would be pointless i wont be using the system for anything other than plex server and Plex Home Theater, so no need for speed :P

I run a mini-itx sandybridge i3 server to stream PLEX throughout the house and across the interwebs. I was going to try and build you an i3/i5 system but the FX 8230 is the best bang for buck.

Perhaps drop the power supply down to around 400w to save a few quid for the SSD. Corsair CX430 maybe?
