Good afternoon all,

Im looking to get some sort of plex server running so the kids dont ruin their and my dvds. Currently they are stored on an 2.5" external HD.

Im also trying to do this on a budget :D - after lots of reading im still getting confused as to how much power the plex server will need.

I have a RPI3 and have read i the guide for pms - its beyond me so i dont think thats an option.

How about something like this : http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=NanoPC&U=en-us0000006

with an external HD plugged in?

It really has to be plex as it has to be child and wife friendly and our TV has plex built in.

There is nothing ripped in very high quali8ty so shouldnt need much power (all watched on a single source locally so no transcoding i believe?)

Thanks
ANdy

Thanks, all makes sense - my post wasnt very clear - sorry.

Single source streaming - all locally and hardwired.

Dont think there will be any 1080p all 700ish meg dvd rips.

Damn, i thought id cracked it with an external drive - everyone seems to make do with them on RPi3s.

Thanks Frank!

Link for the server install..

Really really easy to first install and then update. I even took my original boot drive when I swapped servers and placed it straight into my new gen 8, updated it and then booted into the server. Worked first time, and kept all my settings/listings etc.

Honestly mate, it is the best way to go, PI is a bit underpowered. This way you can have 3 or 4 streams going on at the same time, as long as your home network is up to it!

Hopefully its easy - i wanted something simple haha

Ill have a proper read now :D

Thanks again
