Hey guys, sorry for being a bit n00bish... But I need someone to tell me how stupid I'm being and set me on the right path!!

So I have just set up plex server (xpenology) and went to test the streaming out on my android phone. Downloaded the app to be confronted with a sign in request.

So, do I need to create a plex account to be able to stream media around my local network?? Only I can't start the app without signing in.

Secondly, the app also says about paying a one off fee to be able to watch media on the device, or pay subscription cost.

I was under the impression plex players were free, and only some required subscription (like the Xbox one).

In short :
1) do I need to create a plex account and sign in on my server to make my server viewable in my local network
2) what plex players (if any) run free of cost? I'm not interested in subscription as I didn't think I would use any of the extras that a subscription brings!

Many thanks for all clarification!

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, you need to make an account (free) and then buy the app on whichever device you want (about £3 or so).

Yeah you have to create an account and register your server in it, that's how the clients find the server, which could be local or remote depending on where you are etc. The account is free and you don't have to pay for a PlexPass sub.

To use the Android app I think you either have to pay a one-off fee or have a PlexPass sub, which includes the Android app. The iOS app is one-off fee only and not included in the PlexPass sub.

The app is free on iOS (or maybe I paid for it previously and didn't remember), but a small fee on google. There is PHT for PC which is free. The app for Samsung TVs is free, as is the one for the NOW TV boxes and the Roku units.

I believe both the Playstation and XBox apps are currently Plex Pass only, this means you have to pay either a monthly, yearly or lifetime subscription fee. Eventually these will be made available to all, and this is generally the norm with Plex players.

Creating an account isn't required to stream using local servers, however having an account is better as it makes everything smoother (not badly encoded films however :)). When you then login on an app it asks you to enter a PIN code into a webpage and links your app to your server/account.

This then means if you configure your router properly you can watch your Plex library wherever you are in the world.
