Can plex (play) and/or plex server be used PC

Ok this is 2 separate questions

1. was wondering if you can use Plex locally like you can Powerdvd/media player instead of the internet but still have the features.

2. If you can run plex server on a pc/server but only run it when needed instead of all the time 24/7, like you do, so I'm not just running the drive all the time when they are not needed (shortening the life)

Or maybe you have some better options that will do a similar job.

If you are asking if you can see artwork and play movies on the plex server then yes you can. Technically you are using the web browser as the player, but web browsers can play plex media.

Sorry the question must be confusing its 2 separate questions,

1. Install the Plex Server software, add all your audio/video folders
2. Install the Plex Client software (or try the web browser!)

Close both the Client and Server down when not in use

Job's as gud'un

This, except I use the Plex on my Nvidia Shield to stream locally from my PC. I only run Plex server on my PC when I need it and it's other wise not intrusive.

The setup process is fairly straightforward too, the default setting should be fine, just add your media locations and away you go.

Thanks, so, as long as I close both Client and Server, the HDD I use to the storage the media will stop running also ? no more continues drive use ?

Continuous drive use :p ? Plex doesn't continuously use your drives afaik!

I'm actually annoyed that it doesn't feature a ''keep alive'', I have an external WD drive connected to my desktop which runs my Plex server but where 5tb of my media is on.

When playing media of that drive, the HDD first has to spin up and I have to wait an annoying few seconds for it to start playing, playing media from an internal HDD is never a problem as I've disabled shutting down the HDD's for all internal drives. (Apparently you can't disable the HDD spindown for USB WD Elements! Because of bloody power saving).

But yeah to both, you can stop the server and start it on demand. I didn't even realise there was a seperate client, I just used the web-client on PC (mainly use Plex clients on Samsung TV though and on iOS and Android)...
