Im looking to build a plex server for storing and transcoding videos to now tv boxes around my house and also to use it for the odd bit of big screen gaming:)

I have one of these kicking http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mini-itx/elite-120-advanced/
unfortunately i have 2 boards both being full size:(

but i have a q6600 with 4gb of ram and
a i3 530 with 6gb ram

would any of these be up to the job or should i just bite the bullet and get a Intel Pentium G3258 with a matching board? Would prefer just to use what i have but understand its old tech.

The i3 will cope fine with what you're asking. It's got hyper threading which I don't think the G3258 has so can cope better with any transcoding. I used a 530 for my main gaming machine for a while so it'll be fine there as well.

I host Plex on a windows server 2008 VM at my old house , my host has a high end dual core chip e8400 wolfdale, iv only allocated 2gb of ram to this vm.

Runs Plex fine, I connect over a VPN frlm another location in to the network and stream, my upload there is fine, if you local though that won't be an issue.

Transcoding works more on processing power, so the more the better. But like I say i can stream OK using my chip, and that is over a vpn across the internet too.

If you have them try them both before shelling out. Obviosly the higher quality your playback the more work the cpu will do.

It works the CPU by bursting for a short time so you will see CPU spike, say for around 10 or so seconds, then drop down to say 6-8% for 10-15 seconds, then spike again rinse and repeat so not always hard maxing your CPU out all the time.

Its more cpu than ram your looking at
