I'm considering building a Plex server (this will also house my other data).

The recommendation for plex is 2000 pass marks / 1080p stream.
And I want to allow for 3/4 + OS
So it needs to have at least 8000.
The other option is to go X99 and get a 5820 and mini itx board.

So, I should setup a Plex server on whatever I've got and try streaming to my devices and see what the CPU usage is I guess?

I have a synology nas! Haha!
Although it's only a 213 I also have a Pi2 but I want something a littl "beefier"

It does, but it only has 2 HDD's which doesn't really have sizing I'm looking for.

As soon as I start to transcode more than 1 stream then my NAS has issues.

I have an old Dell 755 SFF with E8800 Dual core chip, and 10GB ram for all the VM's, running ESX 5.1, several VM's, one of which is a Windows Server 2008 VM which is running plex media server, and it works just fine streaming over the internet.

Eventually it would become a fileserver / plex server / backup server.
I want something that will last me.

I don't really want to buy something "off the shelf" I'd much rather build something myself.
Even if the spec ends up being the same.

Just noticed the Silverstone CS02 case, which actually looks really nice.

I'm tempted to build into this case instead.
