Hi guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong section but I was struggling to work out the best place to post this.

I've been running a Plex server on my PC for a few weeks now and have been loving it, I've subscribed to the Plex Pass but have found I'm am rapidly running out of space. I've been wanting to purchase a NAS for a while so figured now was the time.

I have a 4k TV that I would like to use to its full potential with Dolby Atmos etc in the sights.

I've been looking at a NAS such as the Synology DS418 4 Bay to store the media and the Nvidia Shield Pro to as the server/player.

Will I have any issues transcoding to 4k and is the AI up-scaling of the Shield worth it? Or should I get a NAS that can handle the entire thing?

Thanks!
Xerco

I have non Pro 2017 and used to use Plex (no NAS though) but Plex is pretty poor and lacks support so I went with Emby.

All Movies/TV shows are on my PC and if need be the PC does the transcoding on my CPU by default or GPU (new options) if I choose so.

I assume the new Shield Pro would Ai Upscale those file to 4k if say 1080p files.

Ahh interesting what were your main issues with Plex over Emby? Can't say I've come across any yet.

Part of the reason I'd like a NAS is that I don't like leaving my PC on all the time and would prefer the space to be used for other things.

I paid for Plex Pass for 2 years to support them, the GUI and performance are poor and they very rarely reply in their forum (I did search for my issues and they were years old not new).

Emby is far better but not without its own little issues but their forum is buzzing and they do get back to you with feedback and most times fixes.

I would advise you try Emby but update to beta, the two can happily coexist side by side without messing with each other.

They also have two plug-ins made my members for Kodi, one is better/more feature rich than the other and it has a nice GUI that actually becomes the Kodi skin (hard to explain).

I'm really enjoying the Plex GUI at the moment but as I said I'm still new to the scene. I've taken your advice and have also installed Emby (beta), I'll give it a test run and compare them side by side and see how it goes.

I'm still leaning towards getting the NAS and Shield Pro though!
