Please help an overclocking newbie to get the most out of their new system.

I have tried to find the answers for myself both here and elsewhere on the net, but feel overwhelmed as a novice as too how to overclock (properly)

The system is:

Intel Q6600 G0
ASUS P5K C
CORSAIR XMS2 4 X 1GB
THERMALTAKE VE2000 CASE USING WATERCOOLING ON THE PROCESSOR
Nvidia 9800GTX

The rig was purchased and shipped pre built with the processor already clocked to 3.2ghz using the jumper free configuration option, and the FSB being pushed up to 355. It runs happily at this, however if i try to push it any higher by just pushing the fsb any further it blue screens once windows has started and i try to do anything.

This being a water cooled system i would like to try and get around 3.6ghz from the processor (this seems possible from reading other posts even just on air). But i havent really a clue where to start. I hope this doesnt sound lazy (i have tried to figure it out for myself, but cant fathom it).

Is there somebody there already with this system who can tell me what they did or someone prepered to help me try and get this chip running faster?? I play Flight Sim X a lot, and that is very processor hungry so really want to get it going as fast as possible

Thanks in advance

Craig

Welcome to the forums! Have you checked out the Stickies? They're where I learnt to do it pretty much. I'll leave it to the experts on here to fill you in more, but the basic premise is that you lower the RAM divider and increase the FSB and maybe CPU multiplier and voltages (not too much though!). This is all done through the BIOS, ideally.

Yeah i looked at the stickys, looked at the BIOS, panicked and thought i would try here in the hope somebody with the same/similar setup could tell me what they had their settings at. Dont want to be lazy, i am just very confused and more than a tad wary about the possibility of frying my shiny new computer;)

Ive got mine running at 3.4ghz by the skin of its teeth, its game stable and
3dmark06 stable but not prime stable, which dosent bother me none.
It does blue screen once or twice a week at that speed, so I run it at 3.3xx for daily use, on a multi of x8 and an FSB of 420/425

Vcore is at higest setting (1.5xx), but is only 1.4xx after droop, so its pretty safe.
NB is over volted to 1.4

Thats about as good as it gets for me, I think either the board or the 800mhz ram dont like going any faster, temps are good under load so its not a heat issue, unles the NB is getting to hot.
The RAM certainly feels a little toasty but the CPU temps have never risen to a point where ive thought they are to warm.

So in summary you can probably push a bit higher by droping the multi to 8 and then clocking the pants off the FSB, mine wouldnt go much past 3.2 on the standard 9x multi either.

Just to add, the P5kC is a great board for the money, but remember, its only half the price of some good overclocking boards, so I guess you do kinda get what you pay for in this case.

Maybe faster RAM would help, but im not sure if the weakness lies with the board or the ram. I know youve got corsair stuff which its basicly the same stuff as my OCZ as far as I'm aware. ( 6400, 4-4-4-15)

Dont really know what this means or how it might effect things but the RAM timings are 5-5-5-18 (@400mhz if that sounds right).

Have you done anything to the RAM via the BIOS to assist your overclock??, and is there much else you changed settings wise in the BIOS to achieve your OC or just modify FSB, VCORE and NB??

Thx

Nope, apart from manually set it at its standard rated voltage and latency, in my case 2.1 volts and 4-4-4-15 latency.

Ive tried all sorts of combos with the multi and FSB, and it just BSOD's at anything over 3.4 ghz (cpu), well not strictly true, it runs at 3.5/3.6 but its not stable enough to use.

You could try slacking the latency, but ive not really found it to be any benefit, it still BSOD's when the cpu goes over 3.4ghz.

So like I said, in my case, either the board cant cope with it, or the RAM cant, im tempted to buy some faster RAM as there are some cheap kits going about, but im not sure its worth the trouble in real gaming terms... Im quite happy with 3.3/3.4ghz on an £80 mobo.

I would suggest you drop your cpu multi to 8x and pump your FSB speed and see how far you get.
