Hi all,

I know everyone gets tired of these threads but I would appreciate your thoughts on the below. As a bit of background, my mobo is dead and so I'm doing a small upgrade. Existing specs are in my sig.

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR Intel P45 (Socket 775) = 76.99
GPU - XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 = 128.98
Memory - OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 = 69.99
Heatsink - Coolermaster Hyper TX3 CPU Cooler = 13.98
TOTAL = 289.94

Budget is arouind £300. I don't play games. I simply use my PC for multimedia, i.e. music, films, tv shows and work.

Btw, can I use the new 4gb RAM with my existing ram to make 6gb or not really?

Thanks.

I don't think so because they have different frequency and timings.4GB will be enough for what you'll do with it.And like coupe69 said,you don't need a 130 quid GPU if you're not gaming.Here is a better mobo and a better cooler to help you overclock that E6600.The HD4670 will be excellent for HD streaming and you'll be able to have smooth gameplay if you decide to game a little on the PC.

Or you could even go for AM3 and get a better CPU and RAM.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm intrigued by the AMD option. I had a bit of a google and looks like it'll give much better performance than my existing CPU.

You're also both right on the GPU too. However the 4670 has only one DVI out and I need two - one to power my monitor and the other for my tv. Yes I could just buy an HDMI-to-HDMI cable, but given I already have a DVI-to-HDMI, I'd rather not.

Any suggestions?

The ram question is it will work, however it may cause problems with your machine and all of the ram will run at the slowest frequency out of the differing ram. My advice stay with the 4gb and ditch the other 2 which are different. For what you want they will not be much of a difference.
