An additional £50 or so to change from what I specified, for the uses it probably isn't necessary, if there is any more space in the budget I'd be tempted to go for a proper graphics card rather than onboard.
As it happens I'm looking to build a system for around the same price point for my brother. I came up with two similar solutions to the above. He wants to do some basic gaming on it as well as media encoding and general web use etc, so I have gone for 1gb memory instead of 2 and instead gone for a 7600GS gfx card, and a bigger hard drive.
What would be the best choice between a Pentium D 805 and a AMD 64 3500+ for the uses specified? Could they be overclocked at this price point or will it need a better mobo/PSU etc?
If you are going to be using more than one program at a time or if the program is coded for multi-cored systems then the dual core would be best but the A64 would probably beat it in a straight single cored application. If you can overclock then the P4 805 has been known to get to 4ghz but it is far from guaranteed.
Both will allow a little lee-way in overclocking terms as it is a decent enough PSU but mATX motherboards are never particularly great for overclocking. If you are buying a standalone graphics card then that gives you more choice in terms of motherboards but then you are also loading the PSU more so you are probably limiting your overclocking options in that way. Simple answer is to try it and see.
OK thanks. I'll see which way he wants to go. I've advised him the A64 would probably be a bit better for games and the Pentium D would be better for some stuff like media encoding. And was looking at full ATX motherboards without integrated graphics
