Plug in to tower jack plugs or sound card?

Hi all, question here.. I have a high end sound card, I also have decent headphones.

If I plug the headphones into the USB or jack plug on the tower, will I be listening to the on board sound or sound from my sound card?

To get sound from the sound card do I have to plug directly into it?

Also my headphones have a USB or a small jack plug, which is better?

Yes, you have to plug directly into the sound card to make use of it. If you plug into the motherboard's audio jacks, then you'll be using the onboard audio.

When it comes to USB audio, the headset/headphones or speakers have their own sound processing electronics.

If you've got a good sound card, then that will provide the best audio quality.
