Plugged in new graphics card, system not happy

Hey all,

So I built a new system recently, i7 3770K, Gigabyte Z77 D3H... And originally I had just re-used my GTX560Ti from my previous machine. I decided to upgrade that as well and just got an MSI GTX670 Power Edition :D

However... I just plugged the new card in and the system doesn't seem to like it, I get the Gigabyte splash/post screen come up but I can't press anything to get into the BIOS/Boot Menu/etc/ and it just sits on that screen for a while before eventually going to a black screen and then sometimes a strange red screen with bizarre little white and black lines on it.

If I unplug the card and plug my screen into my motherboard instead I get normal operation, I can get into the BIOS, boot one of my OS's and so on, but as soon as I plug the card back in it just sits there :confused: I've re-seated it a couple of times now, power cables are all plugged in correctly (and like I said if I remove the card everything works fine).

So I'm a bit stuck... Anyone got any ideas please?
 
It's on a fairly recent one I think - F16 (They are on 18 or 19 now)

Could it be that it's somehow picking up settings for my old card (not sure why the BIOS would but this UEFI stuff is a bit new to me)? Unfortunately the old card is gone so I can't put it back in :(

I'd update it. The mobo has a dual BIOS as a safety feature so it's not something to be scared of doing. The 560Ti and 670 should draw about the same power from the PSU...what do you have out of interest?

You can try doing a CMOS reset (resets the mobo to factory settings) but I doubt that will make any difference. There is always the possibility the GPU is a dud, can you test it on a friends machine perhaps?
 
Gigabyte website onyl says F16 and F17e beta?

have you tried resetting the CMOS to start from basic settings? backup previous ones in a profile.
 
I've got an Antec CP-850 (It's the non-standard sized one designed to fit in the Antec P183)...

I'd be able to get into the BIOS even if the GPU was a dud though right? I can't even get past the splash screen - they keyboard is clearly working because I can Ctrl+Alt+Del triggering a reboot, but I can't press any of the keys to get into the various BIOS options.

I just tried booting without the card and hitting "Load Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS, but I get the same result when I put the card back in. I guess it's time to have a go at flashing the BIOS, wish me luck!

Haven't tried CMOS, what can I use as a jumper?
 
Good luck, I got rid of my D3H for this very reason. Gigabyte were useless in diagnosing it, despite my plying them with every sort of diagnostic information they could possibly need.

Their answer? Send us your PC to test.

Wazza tried posting this on Tweaktown for me and escalating it with a GB rep and all sorts. It's probably related to a PCI-E lane switch bug that a lot of people have reported.

Mine wouldn't boot into Windows with the GPU, but would boot. RDP to the machine and check Device Manager to find the GPU couldn't start due to lack of resources. I had the same BIOS woes as you too.

The odd thing is, gave it to my brother with an i3 and it works perfectly. Stick an i5 in it and it goes loopy.
 
Hmm :S let's hope I'll be okay after a BIOS update.

So I've got the latest (non-beta) BIOS from Gigabyte's site (F18), and put it on a FAT32 formatted usb drive as per the instructions. Now when I try to flash using that file in Q-Flash it just says "Warning: File Size Incorrect" and I cannot proceed.

I saw a thread at tweaktown suggesting that I have to use @BIOS first because the newer BIOSes are larger file sizes:

How do I do that though?

On a side note, since it sounded from the link above like I need to go into Windows for it I just tried to boot in and I get a bsod just as windows tries to load :(

AHCI/IDE/RAID mode for your SATA controller set correctly for the Windows boot?

Presumably you've reset the BIOS during all the faffing, and that's probably reset too. :)

Did you extract the file first before you copied it to the flash drive? Use Q Flash, updating the BIOS in windows is a bad idea by rule of thumb
 
My board is the Z77-D3H wazza, rather than Z77X-D3H so I've flashed to F18 just now (thanks though)

The flash seems to have gone through correclty (I extracted the files properly first as described above (Doh!!!). Now to plug the card in and hope for the best.

Also randal - spot on it had reset to IDE!

Update: Made it into the BIOS!!! Well done guys your help has been awesome, I didn't expect any less :p

Now my next problem is resetting the bios has caused it to lose the boot options for my Linux OS and my EFI bootloader (rEFIned)... Off to the Linux forum to try and work this one out I think!
