Plugging a card reader in a smartphone

Right you knowledgeable chaps.. I have a sammy Note (original) and I also do a lot of photography
I want to plug a card reader in my Note and copy the files to the phones SD card
also I see people mention that they plug in an external hard drive into the phone
well I have recently tried and got no where fast
the card reader is just never seen at all
I have 4 external hard drives 3 of which have there own power and another one which is powered by USB

I cannot get my Note to see or detect any of them even bought a little add on lead thing that people told me would sort me
but no joy at all

I must be a total dinosaur because I see the you tube clips of people hooking there Note's upto a large flat screen Tv and playing such as Angry birds on the phone but actually having the graphics coming through the TV

well I also bout a Lead for £16 off the big site and I cant get a squeak of anything out of my TV either

help me as I have no more hair left to pull out
 
When you plug in the USB OTG cable do you not get a notification up top saying it's connected?
 
Looking at videos of the not otg support, you should do. This may indicate a non compatible or faulty otg cable maybe!
 
Note should support OTG without root just like the S2 does. The first OTG cable I bought was faulty and it didn't read anything. Second one I got worked straight off the bat.
 
Hmm actually yeah you're right, OTG support for FAT32 drives without root isn't it. Been a while since the S2 days :)
 
The trouble is that my contract is up in about 5 weeks and I want to sell my Note and get something else while I can still get pretty good money for my Note
I have never rooted a phone in my Life and understand that rooting them devalues them a bit ?? Might be wrong but read that on a forum somewhere
plus I am not comfortable doing those things as I had a go on my last phone and it all went belly up so I really fear bricking my phones so just leave them at stock

getting back to my problem of being able to see any storage device it is just not happening
my wife has a Galaxy S2 and none of the drives when I connect them to her phone detects anything either
must add her phone is not rooted either

still not sure as to whether it is because the phones are not rooted - opinion seems to be split

the cable was quite expensive so I would have thought it unlikely that the cable is a duffer

and on top of that I bought another MHL cable to see my phone on the TV and I get nothing through that either

must add that two of my Ext hard drives are Fat 32

but get zip when plugging any of these cables in ??
 
my cable was under £2 and worked without rooting. My guess is your cable is duff. Order a cheap one off ebay or try a freinds one that you know works.

OTG does not need root on the S2 or Note, support is baked straight into the stock ROM.
 
Just a side note - I do this with my S3.
It works with my SD card reader, but not with my compact flash reader.

I guess it's just luck of the draw.
 
Well my card reader is usb 3 and reads 4 different type of cards!!

just ordered another OTG cable so will see what happens when that arrives

its the external hard drives that really bugs me not connecting
 
Might be a stupid question but you're plugging the HDD/Flash Drive into the cable, and then plugging the cable into the phone, yeah?

I don't think it works if you plug them in after the cable is in the phone, but I don't have my flash drive with me to check :(.

It's probably just a faulty cable you have, could you link the cable just so we can check to make sure it's the correct one? Mine cost me £1.40 from Amazon :).

My wife tells me I am stupid... but even I am not that stupid over all I have probably 8 different storage options and all have been plugged in time after time


none of the gives any kind of hint that anything is plugged in

but the other cable for TV viewing does not work either and that cost me £16

so am at a loss as to why I am getting nowhere fast
 
Even without anything plugged into the cable it should still show the USB icon at the top of the screen
 
Another stupid question, you've plugged the power cable into the MHL adapter? :p.

You don't need to be rooted for either OTG or MHL btw :).

Edit: Yeah, with nothing plugged into the cable it should pop up saying "USB connector connected" then "USB connector disconnected" more or less straight after it.

It does nothing at all no matter what device is plugged into the note
no notification of any kind not even for the bare lead

hopefully tomorrow or the day later the new lead will show up and I will take it from there
