Plugging PCI-E x1 into PCI-E x16?

I have a micro-ATX motherboard being used in a home server that's using the onboard graphics so the x16 PCI-E slot is empty, the question is can I plug a x1 PCI-E Gigabit Network card into it or is it for Graphics Cards only? :confused:

Anything moving lower to higher should work but not vice versa e.g. 1x or 4x card in a 16x slot is fine because the PCI-E slots work by chaining lanes together.

As above, tis fine. I've had a x1 TV card in the x16 graphics socket on a board I owned a few months back.

cheers guys, it's what I thought but I had to check first. It's been a real sod finding a low profile Gigabit NIC and to find PCIe one that's in stock somewhere was a real brucie bonus.
