A sunnier or damper area than Ron-ski....
Hi all,

I'll refrain from venting about the absolute chaos of standards (or lack thereof) and general innovation in the realm of plumbing, as it might get unpleasant.

Anyway - I'm simply wanting to add a new trap to a sink in my utility room to add an extra outlet for waste.

So I bought the relevant trap from screwfix and it appears my sink has a 38mm male screw fitting and the trap is a 40mm trap............

So is there a simple coupler I can get that will have a 38mm female thread on one side and a 40mm male thread on the other?

Plumbing expertise most welcome!

I think you'll struggle with an adapter, but just a case of looking elsewhere for 38mm traps I think e.g.

Bearing in mind 38mm is almost exactly 1 1/2", so might also be listed as such at other places.

Yes, I've seen things like this which would be perfect:

But I then need to add the drain outlet, ie like this one:

You look in your box of previously incorrectly purchased plumbing gear and Frankenstein something duhh! Get yourself to Wickes and have at it.
I was tempted to 3d print a fix......

I swear 80% of all plumbing purchases are incorrect. The industry would be decimated if they introduced logical descriptions and standards...

Seriously Wickes is the place - take the bits you already have and they have a massive aisle of fittings. Your issue is pushfit and solvent weld are different sizes called the same size.

Yes, it might be the best solution...right I'm on the hunt..... Wild goose chase inbound!

This is why I have a plumbing box full of fittings, although I can also confirm the one fitting you need is the one you won't have.

Dlockers is right though, wickes is great for this.

Need a set of vernier calipers by your desk to measure and re-measure -
I'm intrigued if 3d printing could give a part with mechanical integrity and thread precision required.

google of 38mm to 40mm converter waste trap
gives pic https://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine...on-straight-connector-white-40mm-x-38mm/564HR
but maybe that's down to my ublocko removing the crap

Take your verniers into wickes and just see how variation there is between 34mm pipe pushfit vs. solvent weld!

Are you sure you don't just need a european to uk waste fitting adaptor eg like below?

1.5 inches is 38mm vs you want 40mm

I had the exact same issue previously and this sorted it. Happens with a lot of European sinks and ikea sinks.

Its gone up 20 pence since I had the issue 2 years ago. U want 1.5"

40mm can be both an internal and external measurement. Likewise with 38mm! The trick is to buy the same brand throughout. Solvent weld stuff is a dream. Compression stuff gives you a bit of wiggle room - but yup - standards? What standards! I spent about 3 days of my life back and forwards to Graham’s - a plumbers merchant and still ended up with a box of junk. Got there in the end though. Perseverance is key!!

Ah brilliant, you're spot on - this did the job, in cryptographic terms I did a brute force approach and bought a bundle of options, this was perfect...!

Good to hear. Someone told me how to fix it on reddit so I'm just passing on the knowledge

God waste plumbing, getting the bits is a nightmare and its about time someone found a better way for half the things.
The seals are crap and can move around.

What I found after a few aborted jobs and return trips to screwfix/tool station etc is to be really careful on ID (inner dimension) and OD (outer dimension) because thats what seems to screw you up.

I know, why they don't just say 40mm for everything, have a single universal connector and this nonsense would end....

Last time I played this silly game I landed up taking all my bits into wickes and putting it all together in the shop after wasting hours going back and forth to screwfix!
