Can anybody shed light onto why this is happening, whenever the toilet is flushed theres a sounds like a trumpet being played badly which stops as soon as you open any cold water tap in the house.

Air trapped in the pipes.
Try finding the main stop **** and closing it slightly to reduce pressure, it worked for me.
