Plusnet ASDL

Could someone reccomend a modem/router for Plusnet ASDL, please?

Plusnet are suggesting I will only be able to get 8MB down the line, so it doesn't need to be all singing and dancing, but I will be streaming full HD content from a NAS to Tv.

Devastated I'm having to sell my trusty N56-U and move away from Virgin cable.

You could keep the N56U and use it as a wireless access point and switch.

That's a good idea, didn't know I could do that. Do I have to buy a modem then?

I actually refused their modem / router on the basis it would likely be absolute garbage.....so I don't actually have anything yet

I always prefer to have the ISPs modem/router available, even if I know I'll never use it. If there's ever a problem it can make life much simpler.

So can I make the supplied modem/router act as a modem only, and allow the N56U to act as the router?

Easier to leave the Plusnet router to do everything except wireless.

Connect the N56U to give you decent wireless and Gigabit network ports. It may have an access point mode you can select, otherwise google 'router as access point' for the manual steps.

I would probably just let the plusnet router provide DHCP, turn off its wireless then connect the N56U to it using one of the N56U's switch LAN ports rather than its WAN port, with it effectively acting just as an extended switch and an access point
