Plusnet Fibre Anygood?

Thanks. When you say one box do you mean plus net supply two routers?

Plusnet area great. You might have to sit on hold for a bit if you call them, but you will get through to someone who is helpful. I've been let down twice by BT engineers not showing up and Plusnet have been very helpful even though its a problem out of their control.

I agree about the router though. It's a very basic 10/100 unit with limited and cumbersome customization options. Investing in a decent router would be advisable. And yes there are 2 boxes, one is the BT fibre modem and this then connects to the Plusnet router on one of the LAN ports. It allows them to use the same router for both ADSL and Fibre customers, just changing the firmware.

Thanks for that. Will likely invest in a better router the as don't want two boxes.

It's actually a modem and a router since the router supplied by plusnet is the one they use for their ADSL service and requires an external modem which is supplied by the BTOR engineer when they come to do the work to set everything up.

There are routers that have both ADSL and VDSL modems which is what Tealc was talking about.

Avoid Asus DSL-AC68U it does not work well with fiber atm still waiting on it being fixed (currently using home hub 2 instead).


Anyway guys thanks for the help :) will probs be changing to plusnet shortly :D

Working fine here if I kill 'spectrum' process. A fix will be available soon I'm sure.
 
Can anyone give me some links to a one box router and modem please. Seen quite a few but but they all refer to adsl connection on the rear. Is the connection the same as normal broadband for fibre and is still adsl? Thanks

There are a few options. Two of which are the BT Homehub 5 and the latest Sky Hub I believe. The sky one has only 10/100 Ethernet so I'd avoid that.

I'm considering the HH5 myself as they can be had reasonably cheaply for an AC router
I don't know if they are much good though.

That does look great. Unfortunately I was more thinking of spending only a fraction of that amount of money.

Was toying with the Tplink archer c7 or the wdr3600. Seems the HH5 is a but dumbed down.

Why do plusnet give such a shocking router. I mean 10/100 in this day and age is mental.
 
Switched from their ADSL2+ service to fibre last month after moving house and can only really say good things about it all :)

ADSL2+ service was solid and I basically maxed it out, though worth noting they cap the upload speed to 0.4Mb/s unless you ask them to uncap it for you.

Fibre is nice and fast, though annoyingly I can only get a max of 34Mb/s down and 15Mb/s up. Still faster than ADSL2+ though! I do notice that in the evening my download speed drops to around 24Mb/s. Also I've paid my one off fee of £5 for a static IP which helps with VPN etc.

I'm using an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato with a separate Meraki AP which works great

Bulldog, I've not seen this.

One thing for the Draytek (and it's just my own theory) is I feel it's a little conservative on sync speed compared to the BT modem. I'm only talking say 5% under the BT modem, but I think it helps stability.

Tealc, yes the Draytek is totally OTT for most. I have a specific reason for using one, but for most it's totally not necessary.
