So having just switch to Sky from BT for internet and seeing just how shocking their traffic management is during the day(less than 1mbit from 10am till 2am), i am going to phone up tomorrow and cancel but i don't really want to go back to BT as their customer support is awful, Plusnet seems to get a lot of praise but is their standard ADSL service any good?

LLU or Fiber are not an option as my exchange is not enabled for either.

Depending on your exchange classification, Plusnet could be more expensive than other ISPs if you are on a Market A exchange which may be the case if there's no LLU from other ISPs.

For example, in their low-cost areas £9.99 for broadband if you take their line rental; £17.49 outside the low-cost areas. http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/products/uk-area-cost-guide.shtml

There's some changes that seems to be a cost-cutting exercise at Plusnet - removal of 24x7 support, unable to raise support tickets online and having to use online chat or sit in long queues on the phone before talking to someone.

I migrated away from Plusnet recently as in the evenings speeds were variable, back to BT and full line speed 24x7. This is on fibre, so not sure whether ADSL would be affected the same way, or to the same extent. Would be worth having a look over on the Plusnet forums before signing up.

We've been using plusnet here on the farm for a couple of years now, no complaints whatsoever.

We're in the same situation as you, fortunately we should be seeing fttc at the end of the year.

I can currently get plusnet for £10 a month for the first 12 months then £17.49 a month after that, but we should have FTTC within the next 6 months.

Yeah im living on a farm too i was with BT for the last 8 years here but their support team are a bunch of monkeys.

I just need to get away from Sky, i've had it for 4 days now and not seen more than 1mbit between 10am and 2am rendering the internet pretty much useless.

How does Ofcom even allow this kind of service to happen?

Well i phoned up Sky and cancelled the contract today, 4 days of this was enough for me

I will probably just go back to BT as they say they don't use any kind of traffic management at all on their ADSL network, i guess the peak hour speeds i was getting with them is the limit the exchange can handle, at least it was a damn sight better than this im getting from Sky.

Plus net have gone down hill the past 6months, just now moved over to virgin with a 10th of August install.

They used to be good but they upped the prices last month and internet has been like a snail for weeks.

Example now

Ping 15ms
D/speed 11.5mbps
U/speed 16.57 WTF!

Reading plusnet's forum the customer support looks excellent and i can't see any complaints of capacity issues or congestion on the ADSL network, im leaning more towards going with them now.

Very happy with Plusnet.

What's the fastest speed you get right now?

If you mean me, between 10am and 2am im lucky to get 1mbit with Sky, after 2am i get the full 8mbit as im on a short line, it was no where near this bad with BT but their customer support was shocking so i wanted to leave.

Well i just signed up with Plusnet. I figured as there is no connection fee's or delivery charges for routers it's really not going to cost me anything if their service is no better than Sky's in this area, i can just cancel the contract on the 13th day and switch to BT which takes 2 weeks to take over the line anyway so i get use of the full month i have paid for upfront.

With BT, they seemed to have torrent throttling at peak hours (understandable), but I always had good speedtest results.

You can bet your ass they do, that's why I left years ago because of it.
I was with BT for years and I mean 10 years+, then all of a sudden in around
2008 they started throttling like mad. Could not watch youtube between 5pm and 10 pm.

BT are rubbish from my experience.

Read the webpage.

When did you leave?
