Hi guys,

My net connection is pretty limited (its the best I can get in the this area though) and I need to protect my bit of it so I can carry on getting owned online.

Having watched Battlenonsense I have started accruing the bits to put an Edgerouter X and UAP-Lite into my home.

I presume (as I'm completely new to networking) I'd plug my VDSL hub one into Eth0 and the UAP into Eth5 (with POE in between)?

I'm dreading the config setup but I'm sure I'll get there. Does anyone know what connection setting PlusNet goes with? The man on the plusnet help chat believes its a PPPOE type?

They use a bog standard PPPoE connection.

If you want to use the Edgerouter grab yourself a second-hard Openreach VDSL modem (Huawei HG612).

If you connect the Edgerouter to the Plusnet supplied router you'll be double NAting.

It's fine as router.

For whatever reason you're talking about using an Edgerouter X. Putting a router behind another router is rarely the most elegant solution.

The hub one doesn't have a 'modem mode'.

The easiest fix is to not use it and use a Huawei HG612 instead. BT Openreach used to provide one (or the ECI equivalent) for every VDSL connection so they're cheap and easily to obtain second-hand.

Doesn't it switch in software, so the throughput is poor? If the OP is interested in Ubiquiti as a complete solution then it makes sense to spend a little extra and get the USG for the throughput stats and smart queues.

It's a hardware switch. It can do more or less everything the USG can do and smartqueue QoS works well on it. The only issue in the past was the UDP reordering bug, but I believe they have fixed that now.

Will I see any benefit by using the hg612? If so I’ll crack on with setting up the ERX with my hub one and if successful I’ll replace that with an hg612

I see, well I have an hg612 on the way and from what I’ve seen it could well be plug and play.

I’ll still make sure I can get things working with the erx/hub one first then quickly include the hg after. I don’t want to take on too big a challenge when I can break it down.

It'll be harder using the ER-X and the HH. Plug HG612 into phone line, plug ER-X into HG612 and then set up the connection on the ER-X using your ISP's details.

Yes it’s on it’s way out. The hg612 should be with me in the next couple of days.

I have the uap-lite running though (via the hh) and it’s excellent.

There is a guide on kitz to install unlocked firmware with a graphic user interface for the HG612, which will allow you to see line stats.
