Hi Guys,

so i have pfsense installed and my isp is plusnet. all is working fine however i noticed the gateway ip doesnt accept icmp/ping packets, so it thinks the gateway is down. This doesnt affect the internet but for stats/overview its misleading.

So i just use google dns as a ip to ping continuous for monitoring on the firewall. or alternatively i can use an ip from plusnet/bt core to monitoring. As of yesterday i was using the IP in the 4th hop to monitor and it was fine and accepting ping packets. but thats not the case as of today. Ive tried hop 5 and that accepts pings and so does hop 6. I dont want to go any further down but ideally want to monitoring as early on the network as possible. I whois the 5th hop and it seems to be BT core https://www.whois.com/whois/195.99.125.138
any advice would be appreciated.

Just use hop 4, but bare in mind that router will deprioritise ICMP packets during times of high load so pinging them doesn't really prove much, set up a monitor on thinkbroadband instead to ping your router.

What is the purpose of your monitoring? If you are checking for the reachability of Internet destinations then I'd argue that testing whether BTs own network is accessible is not achieving that aim.
