I put in the request to move to plusnet fiber. It rated my line at 56mbit even though I always get a solid 74mbit using BT.

I asked plusnet why is it slower than bt and they said they have a different network, this was before I signed up. Do you think I could get my usual speed with plusnet and they are just being conservative with their estimates?

The connection from you to your local cabinet will use exactly the same hardware irrespective of the ISP. If you get 74Mbit now you'll still get 74Mbit after the move (more-or-less).

The speed they're quoting is the minimum you should expect. If you signed up with a new connection with BT you'd be quoted the same figure.

Bts checker has 2 numbers when you check for fibre, a fastest expectation and a conservative, probably worst speed.

Plus net are quoting the slower one so as not to disappoint, BT always quote the higher as they are a shower of *****.
