While I realise it a cheap as chips giveaway, what is it's performance like as a plain and simple router?

Reason for asking is that am going to be going with PN for my ISPin new house and my plan is to use the router with wifi turned off and have teh wifi side of things covered with an AC AP mounted to my downstairs ceiling. This seemed to me to be the cheapest way of getting sound wireless coverage for my new gaff

Yeah mine is still in the box. used once when I had an issue and they wanted it plugged back in. Was only used to confirm the error at the exchange and then back to my TP-Link router.

get a descent router. you can still go down the route of the AC AP as well if you want to boost wifi. All depends on the size of the gaff really.

I've had the Technicolor router on 2 ISPs BE/Sky ADSL2 and now PN Fibre.
I got an ASUS RTN56U to compare, and yes the 2.4 WiFi signal is better, 5.0 pretty pants.
The wired signal is the same on a 55MBs connection.
Of course YMMV, size of building, layout, walls etc
Depending on how many devices you have, homeplugs could be a cheaper alternative.
I changed it because with the PN Fibre router you lose a gigabit port as the Openreach modem uses one as a wan port.

EDIT: Changing the WiFI channel on the Technicolor helped too.

Yeah

All kind of goes with what I have read elsewhere, which was why I was just going to use it purely as a router, no wifi being run from it at all.

Ports wise should be OK as will be going into a 24 port gigabit switch with cat 6 going to the main devices in the house, so plenty of space there. The wifi is primarily for surfing off handheld devices and the odd bit of internet access from the garden when I am doing my astronomy stuff.

Is a nbew build with metal stud work covered in polasterboard. The AP I am looking at getting has a rather good polar diagram in that it covers both above and below it, so will be ideal for mounting in the downstairs area and providing coverage for upstairs too.

Works perfectly for me. I'm on an 'up to 38' package, and get over 30 on wireless. Thats after changing the wireless channel.

I use the standard technicolour for one pc on ethernet and one on wifi.
Works fine for me, don't understand why people give it flack really, it's basic but it works fine.

Mine works fine for now. Connected to it I have 1 PC on wired through homeplugs, and on wifi: 2 laptops, ~3 phones, 1 tablet, 1 TV. These aren't always all on at the same time though.
