I am thinking of changing ISP from Nildram to plusnet, I can't get Be or Skymax or any other LLU for that matter.

Any opinions on Plusnet would be most welcome

Thanks :)

Generally OK, don't use their email though! Reasonable caps and pricing, happy to give me a range of IPs and support is fine.

First got plusnet with my parents in December '01, then when I got my own flat last summer. I heard of a lot of people having trouble with them last Summer - but my parents and I have never had any problems whatsoever.

There's no restricions at all in off-peak time (midnight-4pm) and the peak time caps seem reasonable for the price.

I manage to get away with 100-200GB a month downloads.

They've been owned by BT for a while now but apparently still run all their own operations.

I'd like to hear what Clarkey's got to say about them though.

I've been with Plus for three or four years without any major problems. They have had a couple of disasters where a lot of email has been lost but, hopefully, they've learned that lesson now. They also had a period 18 months ago where they just didn't have enough support staff but that's definitely fixed now. My referrals include two schools and they are still happy after two years.

Whats wrong with their e-mail?
Their email system was hacked and all the email addresses sold to spammers, so any old email accounts get spammed (but not that badly). They've changed their system now, so it should (in theory) be more secure.

I've been with them for about 3 years now I think and I don't have any complaints, good download speeds, good latency, and very little if any downtime.

Jokester

absolute crap, don't whatever you do go with plusnet.

Please give reasons.

I have been with Plusnet for 3 years now.
I've moved house 3 times, they wrote the cost off of every move.
They're tech support went downhill a bit a year or two ago, now are brilliant.
They answer tickets within 4 hours
They answer the phone within 5 minutes usually

Every single month in 3 years, i've downloaded over 100gb a month, usually just under 200gb. Never had a single email telling me to slow down.

The only remotely annoying thing i found was their peak time limit - 20gb between 4pm and midnight. If you approach this, they throttle your peak time internet.

But, a simple case of scheduling any downloads to start at midnight mean i never, ever go over the limit now.

Although i don't use their email, i can't recommend them enough, any problems they've had in the past, they've sorted out.

I must say i've been happy with htem too,

The rents got it for there connection about 3 years ago - 2mb connection.

We had a period of a year of crap connection. Plusnet sorted it buy sending out a BT man to replace the line all FOC.

The only faults i've ever heard of from plusnet are generally user error or damage to the BT line.

I would recommend them to anyone - apart from speed freaks. Or people that can't get cable or LLU

oh oh oh!

If you do this, go through Quidco - i think it's £30 or something for signing up with Plusnet

Don't ask for, or give out referral codes.

You may not promote any website or business you have a financial or other interest in, or use the popularity of this community to help build one of your own. The forums are here to allow people to freely share knowledge, not provide them with personal financial gain, or free advertising.

Plusnet have had some major issues with email (lost messages, lost addresses) and customer service, but a lot of that's cleared up since Hairy Lee (Strafford) got the boot.

I used PlusNet for 3 years was quite happy upunitl the end where they started implementing various caps and trigers without adequate information as to how they were monitoring it. And also they limitied Usenet downloads so i moved to Eclipse. Eclipse were fantastic never had any problems the only reason i left them was that i moved and got Virgin Broadband 20mb which is 20mb for a change :)

At the end of the day you get what you pay for, ensure you read the FUP of any ISP you sign up to, ensure you get in writing about any specific service limits USENET, P2P etc. Also if they have peak and off peak hours.

Good Luck.
Zero.

It was mentioned before the OP said anything about it. I'm just making sure it doesn't happen again in this thread.

The forums are strict because we don't want people using the forums to pimp a business because they get money from it? Don't think you'll find many forums that are happy with that...

Edit: I should clarify, there's nothing wrong with Quidco - telling people to buy something via Quidco isn't going to make you any money. It's referral codes that are the issue here.

I'd hardly say getting 50p discount on a bill per month as a thank you from someone who is asking opinions and feedback is hardly "pimping a business"

BUT, i'm not arguing! I don't want to be shot.

It's the general point - we've had the owners of Enta resellers on here pushing their business at every turn. The line's been drawn at don't push any business you get a financial return from, and that's hardly strict IMO.

they are awful because of their draconian traffic management policy. It means your connection is restricted even for www unless it's gone about 1am at which point you can get full speed until about 8am. Useless for bittorrent especially, have never really had decent latency in games, and their email staff are completely inept. Not only did they lose vast amounts of customer emails because they seemingly had no backup system that worked, but they also got hacked and now I get spam all the time.
