I am currently at me sisters and using her broadband she on BT(don't laugh) but the net just seems so laggy to use, i know at home as i said before i am on 20vm which is faultless but i jut can't get over how slow this is at opening web pages for example.

I swapped her bt home hub last week she was only sync at 3076 ish and put a netgear DG834G, now her sync is 5024 and dl speeds have gone up, just wanted some opinion on line stats, sam says she is only 224m from the exchange.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5024 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db 8.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 18 db

just because she is only 224m away from the exchange doesn't mean, she will get full sync as that is measure in a straight line. and obviously the copper wiring is not laid as such.

the attenuation of your line is quiet high. and the sync seems about right. also BT use something called Ipstream, which has some restrictions on your contention ratio and sync rate. i suggest try changing provider to LLU, such as o2/be or similar.

the BT exchanges are becoming very congested. also they might be implementing bandwidth shaping, which might explain why its lagging.

A couple of observations

1. The Downstream line attenuation being 39dB does not tie in with being 224 metres from the exchange, that's the sort of level you'd expect at 1.5Km! So either there is a sign of a problem, or the phone line literally goes all around the houses before going to the exchange, Sam knows just says the distance as the crow flies

2. The SNR = 11db (Assume this is the downstream), this means she's had the target SNR increased from the standard 6db, this happens when you get a lot of dropouts, they increase the target SNR to give more 'headroom' and make the line more stable.

You want to see what he BRAS profile is, this is the seperate 'rate' at which you are capped, so even if you sync at 5Mbps, her BRAS may be set to a much lower speed, and will slowly increase over time as long as the line stays stable, the BT Speedtester will tell you what BRAS rate you are set to.

Tip: See if you can put the DGTeam firmware on the DG834 she has, this will allow you to artifically lower the target SNR, and I'd expect you could sync at 7Mbps+

This doesn't explain slow loading webpages, a good 1Mbit connection will allow speedy web browsing. People often think that the faster the connection, the zippier their web surfing, but this isn't the case once you get above a few mbps.

It may be her PC, if she's not got much memory, using a slow browser (IE for example), running any kind of firewall/internet security suite, these are all just as likely to slow it all down then anything else.!

Note: This all doesn't explain slow loading internet pages

The normal speed tests say she should be getting 6.5meg, this the results from the bt one

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 4864 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps

I have installed that firmware just go to work out how to lower the snr margins on it, to sandman06's remarks she can't get anything other than adsl max.

Her pc is fine but i have got mine in here and its still dire, speeds in the day are around 450kbs but at nights its crap we talking lucky to hit 75kbs, its just not fast like my 20m vm connection at home that's click a link and its there, guess i just been used to a better service for so long(yes my vm20 is spot on)

In relation to the houses its a private drive so there is only 8 houses but i can't say i can see any poles so maybe its underground ? browser wise i use chrome used to use firefox but i find chrome fastest

I will add its all wireless here which i totally hate.

Have you tried plugging the router directly into the master socket? Also try at the master socket but with all the extensions unplugged, you do this by unscrewing the lower part of the face plate, then plug the router into the socket behind this faceplate.

slow loading web pages as said above isn't down to her sync rate or the connection speed. Try creating a simple HTML page and saving it to her desktop and open it. You'll probably find this is just as slow because it's something like temp files or a huge cookies/history directory slowing her browsing down. Spyware is also possible if her PC is generally well looked after.

She uses Nod32 Antivirus & Spyware but this i notice on mine which is fast at home on my connection, youtube is a joke too viewing videos is painful.

Run a tracert to youtube.com and paste it back here. If there's something going on between her PC and router it'll show up. But I suspect it's her PC. you can also try pinging with a bigger packet and see if latency increases much.

There is 3 sockets and they are all like that take the cover off and its wall and wires, tried the router in all the sockets, i think its congestion as when it gets around this time it goes slow.
