Hi, I have a Asus xonar ds sound card 24 bit, but would like to know a few things about bit rate, and sample rate?

First i have read quite a lot about 24bit and kinda understand what it means, but does setting the default format in advanced option in sound menu to 24bit improve mp3 playback, i ask because everything i read relates to recording and not standard mp3 playback!

And sample rate, is this only for recording too? I read so much and really confuse myself with the actual understanding (benifits) of the two?

I dont record nothing my soul purpose of having this card is best sounding music quality, and also to relieve cpu usage in gaming.

And if anyone has this card could you tell what to set it too for optimal sound quality.

Thanks in advanced

bit rate: bit rate is the amount of bits per second that is used to represent sound. Because these files are stored digitally (1 and 0) they are capable of storing music depending on this arrangement. the more bits or data per second the higher the quality the sound would be. However, if your card is set up to do 24 bit and the file is only 12 bit playback then you would notice no difference as the card can only produce the bits per second that the file makes.

so, the higher the bit rate the better but if you don't have high bit rate files to play you wont notice a difference.

unfortunatly i have no idea about sample rates, but each computer setup will have its own "optimal sound quality" also bear in mind that good sounding music varies from person to person, so one setup may not suit another person.

also bear in mind if you want to hear the best quality music mp3 isnt ideal, its quite compressed, if youre recording off of cds do it in lossless format

hi, thanks for the info, is there a way of taking a 320bps mp3 ablum and redoing it in lossless format?
