just reqistered, so this is my first post.
i need to upgrade my ram for my gaming pc, a simple task, however reading through the mainboard manual has thrown me off completely. im looking to upgrade to 2x 1GB (max capacity for mb).
My rig is a Shuttle sk83g with a VIA K8M800 based board, socket 754 amd athlon 64 3700+, running at default 200Mhz FSB atm.
currently i have 512mb, stolen from another pc because the ram I originally bought (unbranded 1GB) was faulty or incompatible. This is why im cautious to get the correct ram this time.
like i said the mainboard manual confuses me a little. the first bit goes like so:
System Memory Configuration

The FX83 mainboard has two 184-pin DIMM slots that allow you to install from 64MB up to 2GB of system memory. Each 184-pin DIMMs (Dual In-line Memory Module) slot can accommodate 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB of PC1600, PC2100, PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200 (2.6V) compliant 2.5V single (1 Bank) or double (2 Bank) side 64-bit wide data path DDR SDRAM modules.
ok I get this bit… easy enough to understand… i will want PC3200 (DDR400) to match my FSB so I don’t bottleneck my cpu. I’m a little unsure about the 2.6V bit, guessing thats a minimum voltage, but my BIOS goes up to 2.70 I think, that easy to check with ram spec sheets.
so good so far…. but then:
Install Memory
------------------------------------------------
Install memory in any or all of the banks. The combination shown as follows.
Don’t support double-sided X16 DDR DIMMs.
now this throws me completely… ive searched for DDR with a density of 512Mx8 and 512Mx16 and neither seem to exist. I am hoping someone can shed some light on this strange table.
here is the ram which i am considering buying that is available to me atm, (links to spec sheets). none of these apart form the supertalent ram seem to quote the density:
