It's the one where you get a full page popup which looks exactly like "my computer" (with disk drives etc showing), and what looks like a fake progress bar of an antivirus application detecting viruses on your pc.

I've seen it a few times on my own pc, even though I was browsing 100% reputable sites (confusing), but managed to negotiate away from it.

One of my elder family members was not so lucky, and is now infected.

Does anyone know the name of this virus so that I can look up how to remove it? Thanks

sorry for the copy/paste, but do this

disable system restore
remove your 'av'
run ccleaner slim http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
run nod32 trial http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_download_int.php
run mbam http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
run spybot http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/Spybot-Search-Destroy/1043809773/1

still screwed?
run combofix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

following this, stop going to bad sites etc

use firefox http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
install this addon for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

when firefox opens following the restart, tick the 'Easylist' subscription

Now remove the NOD32 trial and spybot and install Microsoft Security Essentials

combofix is great

Does it look like this (small image, sorry):

That particular malware is called 6malwarescan.com. You can find removal instructions via Google, you should do what bledd. has suggested first.

Ask a silly question you will get a silly answer. Besides, no harm in it since Bledd already gave the best answer possible!

Miserable git! :p:D

How was it a silly question? lol

I don't have the persons computer here infront of me, I've been asked to provide advice on how to remove the virus, and I correctly assumed that someone would recognise it.

You tried to be a smartass and failed

Heh, unlucky. Customers always getting this one :/

Comboxfix/MGTools/Trojan Remover make short work of it. I usually run Malware Bytes & SUPER Anti-spyware afterwards as well :)

Remember to turn off system restore before you start as well.
