Png transparency

Any gfx gurus that could help me get the black area of this picture to transparent??

I know i could use index transparency and set black as a transparent colour but i would preferably like to maintain alpha transparency.

Basicaly i want to cut a hole in the image where the black area is. ;d

Excellent, how did you do that? I might need to edit the image in future, would be handy if i could do it.

My gfx editor is fireworks.

I've never used fireworks for more than 5 minutes because I hated it.
In photoshop I used the Magic Eraser Tool and set the tolerance to 40.
Only had 1 layer so it made it transparent.
