What are they like for older houses with thick walls? Still good if one was mounted downstairs to reach all rooms? I know that’s vague..

I can't speak for older houses, but I have one in the ceiling on my landing. I kept my old Asus RT-N66U out in the shed as a switch for my server, plus as a wireless ap for the back garden. But the Ac-pro not only covers the garden, but my phone picks up the wifi when I get home from work while still in the car. I'm mega impressed by the range.

No WiFi will penetrate very thick walls. Unifi are a dream to set up and manage. But I wouldn't expect super miracles if you're replacing a homehub 5's wifi and keeping it in the same place.

Pro has the strongest signal, but it's pricey.

Personally I went for the pro after being impressed with the normal units in work.
