I've just received this email from Licence Guard.

Basically it's a scheme where you pay them an annual subscription, then, if for some unfortunate reason (perhaps killing a few orphans?) you lose your license, they pay up to £15,600 a year in mini-cab costs, assuming you go for the £125 a year option.

Assuming it's all legitimate and does what is says on the tin, I think it's actually a good idea, except for the obvious problem that it's effectively reducing the punishment given out to potentially serious motoring offenders....

What say you, men of motors?

These will either be out of business very quickly, or will have a ridiculous number of terms and conditions that means that they never pay out.

You got to go Platinum all the way, you can get a driver for 15k a year, sod the cabs :)

I seem to recall a scheme like this years ago. IIRC it was called, "St. Christopher Insurance". Don't know what happened to it or if its still about.

Read the small print, they will only pay out if on the day you receive your points the sun and moon align in conjunction with the driver being photographed eating a pasty whilst attempting to overtake a minibus with no fewer than 12 children onboard.

"There are a few exclusions such as driving whilst over the alcohol limit or under the influence of drugs a full list of terms and conditions, including exclusions will be emailed to you with your membership documents "

That's just rubbish, what goods that if you cant drive drunk and off your nut!

LicenceGuard is issued by the Isle of Man Assurance Limited (IOMA). You will not be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if the insurer is unable to meet its liabilities to you.

El-oh-el

Nice, basically they want as much money for a year without paying anything out then the company will vanish.

Not a bad get rich quick scheme.

How boring :(

I was wondering how they planned on turning a profit, now I know! It's a bit ridiculous not sending full details until you pay them aswell :/

And as mark says, what's the point if they wont even let you drink drive :(

Similar schemes are common in Haulage for some reason.

The idea is if say I lost my licence, they would provide a replacement driver to do the driving work for me, hmm, ok, I lose my licence, my employers don't mind, they then don't mind somebody else driving their truck whilst I sit in the passenger seat on full pay? - Yeah right!

I don't know anybody daft enough to have taken this "offer" up, and I know some very daft peeps, hey, we are all truckers after all. ;) :D

Take your pick. ;)

I know of a better scheme going on round here, go down the local student union, find a poor impoverished student with insurance to drive other cars who was doing nothing on the day of the offence, offer money to take points.

Simples.
