Pokemon Cards, are they actually worth anything?

My girlfriend parents gave us all her Pokemon cards they've had stored in a cupboard yesterday. I've sorted through some of them and found a number of 'rare' ones (with a star on the card). They are all mostly 'unlimited' release with a handful of First Editions. I still have a tin with another couple of hundred of cards left to go through but I got bored...

I've put them on https://pokecardvalues.co.uk/ and apparently the 26 'rare' cards are worth £783. Does anyone know anything about selling Pokemon cards?

I've had a look at Ebay and my highest value one (Venusaur) has sold ones ranging from £50 - £488... Pokecardvalues suggest it's £230.

Does anyone have any experience in selling these? I guess I could put everyone on Ebay and see what happens but that's a bit of a faff. I wouldn't expect to get £783 but if I could see £250 then I'd be happy with that.

I wouldn't sell them on ebay. Buyer could respond saying it's a fake and return you a fake and you'd be stuffed.

I seem to recall a GD thread recently where exactly this happened to a forum member. I can't offer any advice on the best way for you to proceed with your sale, OP.

Exactly what I came to say. Beware the unauthorised purchase scam or fake claims. Seems rife in the collectible market.

Sell these on facebook / gumtree or if you have a local games store, see if they have a pokemon night and sell them there.

If you use ebay prepare to lose the cards.

I would suggest finding a community or forum to trade these on. There's definitely been an increase in popularity recently but as mentioned eBay has decided they're rich enough to just **** sellers over consistently. Buyers have figured this out and are taking the pee left right and centre. I sold 4 items last week and had a cancellation with apology, a wordless cancellation request even after I messaged asking why, a non payer and a late payer.

Best to sell to people who are actually into the cards, even if it means you have to sign up to a Pokémon forum :D

I believe you’ll get best value if you have them graded. Though knowing whether they could be valuable in the first place should guide that decision.

nah if you're selling to players you'll get the going rate for cards without the need to grade. The cost / time will make it not worth the different in returns for most cards - obviously a near mint Charizard from the first base set would be worth grading.

Best thing is to post some photos up, if they are old you could also have some shadowless cards that could be worth something. You are better off checking on ebay or cardmarket for prices. Up to you where to sell them, selling as bulk might be quicker but you prob get less for them.

Anything of any real value sent them to https://www.pokegradeuk.co.uk/

If you are serious about selling them and wanting decent money for them, get them graded.

Might be pricey but ll you need is a few high graded cards and thats ya money back easy

EDIT:

I dont know how well the link above for grading compares to PSA grading.
Theyve been around a notably longer time than the one above
