I think this is my first post in this forum.

Just busted out the 'ol Pokémon games on the DS, playing some Platinum with an old save that I assume is Action Replayed (been years!) as I have 4 badges, yet have a party of:

Ryuujin - LV28 Bagon
Braver - LV26 Pidgeotto
Jadakiss - LV32 Jynx
Pheromone - LV34 Bayleef
Armstrong - LV31 Lunatone
Kintaro - LV33 Machamp

Definitely know why I had those now I've started a new game though, the Pokémon you find in the grass at standard are so boring and repetitive, haven't even ran into a single fire type yet!

Anyone else play the ol' handheld Pokémon games? Can't say I'm a Pokéfan but as RPG's they are disgustingly addictive.

Played all of the main series and many of the spinoffs with the TCG GBC game being my favourite . Waiting for Black 2 to come out!

I remember that as a kid, don't think I ever won a battle on it tbh.

Platinum is the best game of it's type IMO (i.e Crystal, Emerald, Yellow, etc). Had a lot of fun with the new content, which that game had in spades over D/P, whereas Crystal etc. really didn't have much new stuff.

Just about to fire up a Nuzlocke challenge run of FireRed (hardest pokemon generation by miles) and I'm even gonna pick Charmander at the beginning to make it even harder, as I'll not be able to do anything to the first two gyms unless I get lucky and find a Mankey/Oddish.

Nuzlocke Challenge

The most basic Nuzlocke rules, as they were first introduced, are as follows:

• Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.

• The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.

Gonna go with these optional rules:

• No catching/using legendary Pokémon.

• Considering a black out/white out to be "game over," even if there are Pokémon left in the PC.

• Banning the use of Pokémon Centers, relying only on Potions and healing items for healing. (Gonna cheat and use infinite PP because there aren't anywhere enough Elixirs to not use Pokémon centers, gonna make it very, very hard, I'll also not hoard tons of healing items, ration them so to speak)

Can be done with any generation of the games, you should all give it a try.

The Elite 4 will fear my army of Ratatta ft. Charizard.

Can you not catch a Caterpie and evolve it in to Butterfree with Confusion?

Could do, but if I run into anything else in the Forest my chance will be gone, I could end up with a Charmander/Ratatta/Pikachu team or something for Brock.

I'm not going to overlevel either, so I can't just sweep his team through raw power with some Charmeleon embers or something.

And if I do get lucky and get a Caterpie, Butterfree is dual Bug/Flying which makes it 4x weak to rock, so one rock throw and dead.

The only viable way to do this other than starting with Squirtle/Bulbasaur is grab a Mankey before the Indigo Plateau, but then again to even get access to that area you have to beat Gary who has Pokémon way above lv10.

Wtf am I doing to myself.

You have a 40% chance so the odds are rather good.

Chances of not getting rocks thrown at Butterfree though? I'll need to crit or confuse at least Onix to stand a chance, cause he'll probably tank at least 3 confusions.

Anybody else interested in doing a Nuzlocke? They're bloody fun if nothing else.

Well Black & White and Black & White 2 are completely different, even set in different regions iirc.

As good as the newest ones are for gameplay purposes, a lot of the Pokémon are horrible, lets face it; each new generation that comes out it's turning more and more into Digimon, they used to be actual monsters based around reality and other fiction (religions etc) which was cool, now it's just a plethora of robots.

I actually wish that Digimon took Pokémons place for video games, same mechanics etc with all the elements and the game engine, but much better looking pokemon.

I get that it sounds like I'm contradicting myself (Whch I do a lot) with the whole 'its turning into Digimon that's bad' and then saying 'I wish it was more like Digimon' but meh, I'm too stuck in my childhood with first two generations, starting getting abit stupid after that, whereas Digimon were always over the top and extremely unrealistic.

In original R/B/Y Butterfree was my my favourite way to get through the first gyms with Charmander as your starter, but some of the mechanics (special attack and special defence versus just one 'special' stat) make that a lot more difficult now. Paralysis also used to be even more powerful in those earlier versions as well with a 1/3 chance of full paralysis and speed halved. Admittedly I've not even tried FireRed or LeafGreen.

Can't believe how many times I played through the originals to trade in to Pokemon Stadium on the N64 though.

Well since attack/defence was split up into sp.attack/attack and sp.defence/defence Brock became a lot easier regardless of type match ups as Geodude and Onix have quite low sp.defence, so even an ember can be fairly effective from Chameleon/Charmander. Butterfree's confusion is also even more effective than it was in the originals, as they'd be able to tank confusions for days due to super high defence in R/B/Y.

Butterfree's low defence and 4x weakness to rock, added with the STAB bonuses from Brock pretty much make her a worse choice than a Charmander IMO with the 3rd generation remake, Char can usually survive at least one hit, whereas Butters will just drop to the first attack after doing about 1/4 their life with a confusion, that's if she can even outspeed Onix.

Still haven't started this yet.

He actually got more difficult in the later games. Special Attack and Defence were in a single Special stat in the first games in which Onix's base special stat was 30. Now that they have been split up his base Special defence is now 45 which makes him more resistant to confusion. Geodude is the same as he was the originals.

Yeah you're right, how the **** am I gonna beat this dude, I've started it now found a Rattata in route 1, 2, 22, and the grass in Pewter City and a Metapod in the Forest. So I have 4 Rattata, a Metapod I cba to even evolve and a Charmander lv14. GG. I knew before I even started I'd probably end up with an army of Rattata.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know if the preorder carry case that Game are giving away will also fit the 3ds XL? Its only listed as DS / DSi compatible.

I also found out that the yellow pikachu version of the 3ds XL is being released in Europe with this game, makes me annoyed that I only just got a red one a week ago and already had to send it back for a screen repair

No idea about the first bit, but would you really want a Pikachu DS? Be a bit embarrassing.

Then again I have a pink DS but meh, I'm a bell end.

Yes I would I don't take it anywhere though, I just bought it to be able to play some of the games I'm missing out on the PC. The resale value of those limited edition Nintendo consoles is also a lot higher, but it would probably cost a lot more in the first place. If anyone asks why an almost 30 year old would be carrying around a pikachu 3ds, Id simply tell them ... Resale value when I no longer need it.

Watch out though, people might think you have the Pikachu DS to lure children. In all seriousness I wouldn't be surprised if a 30 year old man with a Pikachu DS with all the recent media coverage of predators got lynched.

That Keldo looks bloody horrible. Cant you just order a copy of White 2 from the shop online and ask for the event to be shipped with it or something? Otherwise good luck.

I seriously recommend to anyone who likes these games to look out for ShinyGold, BlazeBlack/VoltWhite, Liquid Crystal, PerfectSilver/PerfectHeart, Fire Red OMEGA & Light Platinum. They all have every Pokémon self contained in one ROM (including legendaries) and all trade Pokémon evolve normally. It's legal, if you have a ROM reader and a corresponding physical ROM you can patch the mods onto the base games, but you'll loose the base game in the process, but they are very cheap nowadays.

Also, you can grab DS capture software cheap these days too.

In case nobody knew, to start hard mode on Pokémon Black 2 you need a friend who has completed the game to trade you a code via infared. Your code you get at the end for hard mode cannot be redeemed on your copy, and I don't think you can go to the global either, it has to be somebody who is physically next to you via infared.
