I was starting to look at adding some circular polarising filters into my kit bag.
The first somewhat disconcerting thing I noticed on checking was that my key lenses have filter diameters of 58, 67 and 72mm, meaning that I'm going to need either 3 different filters, or a mount that allows the use of a 72mm on all three. Does that type of kit still exist?
Back in my film days, I used to own a Cokin filter kit, but I'm guessing that it's more than a little dated now. Thoughts?

you can get step up rings which will allow you to fix a larger filter to a smaller lens, just do searches for 67-72mm step up ring etc on the auction site and there'll be plenty to chose from. (they might mean you've to take your lens hoods off if you have them though...

Wouldn't you need to take the hood of regardless, as you need to be able to adjust/rotate the CPL?

Yeah CPL + hood is no fun.

Also I'd advise against step-up rings. They're such a hassle and once you've bought the extra lens cap the costs are similar.

What type of lenses are they? For example a CPL wouldn't be as much use on a telephoto compared to a wide angle lens.

not that it is less effective- they are generally not used as much on telephotos.

My options will be an 85mm F1.8, 17-40, 70-200 and 400 F5.6.
Why is a CPF less effective on a non-wide angle lens?

As said already, they just aren't used as much. CPL are usually used to select reflections (cars, water, windows, but also anything with light on it will change slightly) but mainly they are to get rich blue skies. With a telephoto you generally won't have a huge amount of sky (unless you shoot aircraft) and therefore it's not worth it. Likewise with the 85mm prime, ignore a CPL as it's not a huge amount of use for portraits.

But you should definitely get one for your mid range zoom. Try that and then move from there.
