I recently completed a BikeSafe course with Surrey Police and I wanted to share my experience with the forum.

Overall I found the day very enjoyable and came away with a few tips that I can improve my riding with.

We spent an hour or so in a classroom, chatting about riding styles, threats, etc before heading out onto the road for observed rides. We had a 2:1 ratio, which meant we got plenty of time being observed, but enough time to chill out at the back following.

Every 45 minutes or so, we’d pull over, chat about the ride and the police observer would comment on a few things, make suggestions and we’d chat about it all.

The police were never patronising and approached the whole thing with a refreshing level of realism about biking. They’re all bikers themselves when not in uniform, so know what it’s like when there’s a nice twisty B road open in front of you.

It was a fun day, and well worth it if you can get onto the course.

Always thought about doing one, but would be worried they would be slightly annoyed by the excessively loud Akra can and small (7x5 plate) - I know I could swap them back for the day but the standard can is urgh!

As long as its stamped for road use it would be fine? The plate might well be a problem though if the lettering is less than the legal width.

Swapping a plate for a day isn't a big deal, I wouldn't worry about the can. A few of the guys on my course had loud cans and smaller (but not those crazy tiny) plates, and nothing was said.

Don't forget the police are there to teach and observe rides, not book you for minor offences. They might mention it, suggest you get it changed sometime, but they're not going to give you a ticket!

Ducati sponsor BikeSafe so that is a BikeSafe loan bike that gets used to generate interest at shows and used on BikeSafe days, etc. The police took turns on it, I think if you ride every working day of your life, being comfortable is probably a priority, as they didn't seem enamoured with it.
