Hi

Was driving home today along the motorway and i noticed a marked police car (BMW estate) with windows up sitting almost across the the two lanes for the oncoming slip road onto the motorway.

I noticed it in my rear view mirror when i went passed.
The windows were up and officers were in car. I was borderline speeding (speedo was saying 78-79mph) but they just sat there and did nothing.
Any idea what they might have been up to?

Thanks

It's the new high tech HADES7 speed cameras, that during the pandemic are handing out hefty fines for even marginally being over 70.

I'll say in about 2 weeks you'll have a letter though the door and a court appearance.

(speedo was saying 78-79mph)
So you were speeding. Unless your car is ancient the speedo will be pretty accurate. The days where you could have 80 indicated and only be doing low 70s are long gone.

Not that they're likely to give a monkey's about you doing anything under 80 unless traffic conditions were bad.

The road was pretty dead and i just expected they would follow me and pull me over if they were going to fine me. Obviously speed vans are different but i have never seen a police car sit like this on a slip road.

Yea my motorcycle is 17 years old, when it says 135mph im probably only doing about 120mph.

To the OP, there is about a 99% chance they were not speed checking, and then even if they were, it's very unlikely at those speeds they would do anything, more than likely skiving off.

Not going to lie but i had a bit of a sweat on when i read your first comment

Lol soz.

Nah I see them all the time doing that, no idea what they are up to Ive been past them many times doing well... Let's not say.

You do occasionally get the VOSA vans at the side, I think those are checking MOTs usually you'll see a police car positioned somewhere at the next junction.

Anyway, honestly you'll be fine.

no offence intended, but you said "I Was bordering speeding" yet your were doing close to 80 ?

borderline in my opinion is 70, if your doing 71, your speeding ?

The last 2 times for me, first one, can't remember which road, but dual carriageway A road that comes off the M5 to South Wales, heading South West, there is a section that goes over a crest then a long straight gradual downhill.

There wasn't much traffic and I came over the crest doing about 95, a good half a mile down on the left was a police camera speed can in a layby there. Fortunately I'd clocked him straight away, and braked right back to 70, never heard anything.

Second time more recently during lockdown. I'm was in the middle of lockdown, I was in furlough and borred, went out for a spin, ended up coming onto the A45 at Rushden, headed north east back towards the A14. Road works on a crappy roundabout, so accelerated off the roundabout onto the dual carriageway. By the time I'd really came off the roundabout onto the road I was doing 60, as normal, except this section was still in the road works section, even though there was no road works there, about 100 yards off the roundabout, speed camera van in a layby there. I saw him well late (well I thought) but slowed down before I went past.

Convinced I'd been caught then, I was annoyed about that one not so much about getting caught speeding, more that they might have asked what I was doing there and I had no good excuse to be out. Plus the van was literally about 50 yards before the road changed to NSL out if the roadworks section and there were no road works around.

Anyway, that's been s good 6 weeks now so...

Actually another couple of times thinking about it, on the A14 headed west between Newmarket and Cambridge, again doing about 95mph, very little traffic clear sunny day.

Overtook a silver vauxhall astra in the middle lane, pulled back in front of it, and it accelerated up behind me and blue lighted me. I slowed down to 70 and pulled over to the outside lane, and it went past me, then off the next slip road which was only a couple of hundred yards down.

I think they were giving me a warning more than anything.

Another time with an unmarked, A1 south just as you go under the M25 so it's turns from M road to A road. Outside lane doing about 95, overtaking a very inconspicuous grey coloured vauxhall mariva a think it was. Bloody Audi R8 up my backside, so when I go past the mariva, I back off (a little) and pull left into the middle lane, in front of the mariva, to get out of the way of the Audi, as the Audi goes past, the mariva blue lights and chases after the Audi and pulled it over about half a mile down.

There's an answer here.

Something about slowing down and sticking to the limits but I can't quite put my finger on the wording......

Not really. All speedos over-read to varying degrees. My true speed at an indicated 80 is 74-76 IIRC.

I've been on a busy stretch of A1 before where the same happened as the OP, albeit with an unmarked police cruiser.

Enjoy the showers... :p

OP says the car was parked across the two lanes of the slip road. That isn't a car speed checking, that's a car blocking access off that slip road for some reason, surely?

And mine at 80 indicated is 78 (according to various GPS devices). I was just making the point that you can no longer rely on the speedo being vastly optimistic when deciding how fast to drive.
