drove past a two police ladies on horses today

never thought about it before but why do they use horses?

ive never seen a police horse chase anyone (car or person) either lol

pointless thread but hey ho!

Height advantage, intimidating, it's very high profile. People notice a bobby on a horse much more than they do just one walking about.

I was playing sports in a park, and a drunk man started bothering us. The look on his face when two mounted bobbies came up to him to move him along was priceless. He had no idea what was going on, he did bugger off though.

I always assumed they were mainly used in crowd control being a larger blocking object, and also a higher vantage point for the police offices to assess the crowd.

They have them for crowd control situations mostly, but that would be a waste of resources to only use them for that so when not in those situations I guess they just use them as a form of transport.

I'd love to see a policeman on a horse chasing someone it would be brilliant.

Very good for riots and crowd control. No arguing with a 500kg horse really. Plus, same principle as cavalry, can charge and baton at (rider) range.

i've seen some awful footage of horses (and i don't even like horses, doesn't mean i want to see them hurt) getting kicked, punched, stabbed, bottled, glassed etc by thugs. always felt sorry for them as they have little protection and no choice in the matter.

As King Damager says, they are often seen as crowd control at big sporting events. They are always at Wembley and Twickenham. Quite often they will have the horses facing the crowd and then turn them all to show their flanks, so basically forming a 'horse wall' to hold everyone back until safe to allow people forward again.

Also, if you saw the December 2012 riots in Parliament Square, they were deployed there and were used in a charge at one stage.

Aye, maybe roll out proper barding?

I think police should clean up the poo as well. Dog owners can get fines but police are exempt. Police should carry with a bag and a spade to pick up the horse poo.
Any horse rider is except, actually.

I imagine that is a small minority of cases. I'm fairly certain the ones I've seen have leg and face shields. They are still probably a lot better looked after than other cavalry horses have in the past few thousand years!

Having a horse is like a second brain/autopilot as well. They will avoid obstacles, potholes etc. on their own whilst the rider focuses on more important business like cracking skulls.

Yeah I think much like riot Police, they change what they wear for the situation. At Football/Rugby they aren't armoured, but they no doubt have the equipment in the vans.
